So I am looking at buying:

    hp pavilion dv7tQE

    i7 2630QM
    1GB Radeon 6770
    6gb or 8gb ram

for games, i mainly play just Starcraft 2. Currently play it on a desktop with an i7 920 with 6gb ram and GTX260 card.... i can play on ultra settings and very smooth...

    How will this laptop do?

What fps is considered smooth play ?

I was using a HP4272us which has an AMD triple core processor and can barely play smooth well on low settings (which looks like crap).... should i be considering a different machine?

you cant play on ultra for one, notebookcheck has some benchmarks of it running sc2.

i would say 30+ fps for sc2 is acceptable and if you are hardcore you can always turn the graphics down.

should i assume then that the same i7 processor with the Intel HD 3000 graphics would not be a good choice vs the 6770 on this game?

it would not, the intel hd 3000 is alot slower than the 6770m.

first thing is the res, you can play on high at FHD, and it will be above 30+fps, on ultra thats not going to happen

im asking because i don't want to waste more money on a laptop i just wont like... the DV7-4272us has the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370 switchable, which seems not much different than the 6770 ?

sure the i7 is better than the triple core and i like the fact the i7 can use widi... is it worth to spend additional $400 (what i bought the 4272 for vs upgrading to the i7)

30 fps is not enough for sc2 to run properly if you want to have any chance of winning. stable 60fps is what you need, and you should be just fine getting that on like medium settings. sc2 is insanely cpu hungry, they gpu is just a bit of visual extras.

so basically what i am taking away from this thomas is that since sc2 is cpu hungry, the highest i7 mobile currently just wont cut it for 60fps in anything higher than medium setting ?

the differece in performance is just huge against the 6370m and the 6770m

so just get a notebook that you like, simple as that

If you want to play on ultra you should consider

6850m on the HP Envy 17
    GTX 460m/560m on sager laptops

no sense in going any higher because it will cost you mad $

I have the dv6t Select Edition, so my processor is a dual-core,unlike your quad core and I have no problem running high smoothly at 1920x1080. You should easily be able to get high and maybe even some ultra options.

to give an idea what i have had to deal with

triple core AMD with 6370 on this HP was so bad on 4v4 multiplayer SC2 that FPS got to a worst 7fps when 3-4 players were attacking.... sigh...

    this is with medium settings....

4 player FFA gave me about 25-35fps which wasnt that bad but not great

I have the dv6tse with an i5-2410m and an 6770m. I play SC2 on 1920x1080 medium settings for pretty solid 60 FPS.

I get about 40 FPS on high. Since SC2 is more CPU heavy and your have a better processor, you might be able to squeeze by on high in 1v1.

I can run it on ultra, without any lag. even the final singleplayer mission (hundreds of units) ran without a hitch.

It may run fine on medium, multiplayer 4v4 is the hardest to run.

My laptop gets around 20-30 FPS on Ultra 1600x900 in 4v4 games.

I think the 2630QM is the huge bottleneck in this game. Try getting a getting a better/best CPU model, if you can for this game.

Something is wrong if you're only getting 20-30fps in 4v4 games with 2630qm and 6970m. When I had my 2720qm and 485m it ran fluid as heck with 4v4, like 60+ fps. 2720qm isn't that much faster than the 2630qm. Heck I was playing on a desktop with Core 2 Quad Q9550 and HD 4670 I was playing 4v4 at > 50fps.

The processor starts to matter a lot when there are 8 players. Supply cap is 1600 at that point.

GPU will barely cut it, but should still do okay at 1080p, unless if everyone makes a big rush towards the center of the map all at once :p

CPU can turbo to 2.8GHz turbo on two cores (if Windows 7 assigns the work threads properly, it will goto 2.8GHz for a while), so in terms of CPU, you should also have enough. Unless if HP's cooling system sucks badly, in which case, you'll be stuch at 2.0GHz and will likely have issues near mid/late game (which is rarely reached in a decent 4v4).

    For reference, my i7 2600k @ stock + GTX580 already dips into the 20/30fps range near 30min in a 4v4.

jeremy, are you referring to your laptop? if so, what do you have?

my i7 920 desktop stock with a GTX260 never goes lower than 40fps in ultra settings...

Ok, I have a DV6t quad with 6670m and q2820. I played 4v4 last night and it seem to run pretty well. Any stuttering seemed network related and I was never told to lower system specs. This was on a combination of ultra and very high at 1080p.
