Or you could backup the games to an external drive or to CD/DVD for less downtime.

this. Its what i did, and its a lot better than downloading the games again, or copying them from your steam directory. The backup games with an .exe and installs by itself.

Don't install software you don't know about.

    And use a complicated password.

Well if you got infected by a keylogger you would have more important things than Steam to worry about...

I keep steam and the games installed on seperate partition, so when i do a clean install on my OS partition i just need to re-install steam and im back up and running.

I've also heard that number of steam accounts are getting hacked, but the good part is, Valve will get it back for you. All they need is just a proof that you're the account owner. to I think the most popular way for hackers to get your password is using a keylogger.

Well, you have to report that you're account is stolen, and to prove that its yours, I think you should send Valve your game CD key (if you bought the game from a retail store) or give them the last 4 digits of the credit card(s) you used to buy your games on. You'll get it back though :D.

They have your credit card info on file which also correlates to your address. I'm sure a variety of that and email confirmations will be enough.

Also got a question about Steam. Is there any way to change my user name? I set it up when I was like 14 and I haven't touched it until last year LOL.

You can't change username, only display name (login name will be the same, what people see will be different)

For example, I login with "penguinator####"
    People see "[AH] THE BAT"

Open steam friends, click settings, then change your "nickname"
