is it just me or do all the steam game desktop shortcuts not work anymore.
the last ones that worked for me was cod mw2 which still work but every game since that loads a shortcut onto the desktop comes up with the message "unable to open this internet shortcut. the protocol steam does not have a registered program.
its not a biggy as i just go to my steam games list but why would it load a shortcut if its not linked to the game.

Steam shortcuts never work for me about 9/10 times so I just create all of my own ones. I have no idea why this is but I bet many others have the same issue.

I have about 15 shortcuts to steam games on my desktop, but have never had this problem. I usually have it make a shortcut on install, but some were made after.

    What OS are you running?

It seems like the OS doesn't interpret Steam as a proper protocol (I'm repeating your problem statement as the answer...brilliant, huh? It always takes me a while to make my points and sometimes, I never get there.)

From looking at my dozens of Steam shortcuts (created on the desktop and subsequently moved to folder with a shortcut on the Quick Launch taskbar...quick access to all the Steam shortcuts with no desktop clutter), around April/May of 2010, Steam changed from actual shortcuts to internet shortcuts.

For example, my Arx Fatalis shortcut created by Steam in January 2009 is a regular shortcut whose target is an application: 'F:\Games\Valve\Steam.exe -applaunch 1700'. The last number determines the game that is launched. All Steam shortcuts prior to April/May 2010, for me, follow this format.

My most recent Steam install, Singularity, created a desktop shortcut that XP classifies as an internet shortcut, and under the Web Document tab, the URL is 'steam://rungameid/42670' which is similar to all shortcuts created by Steam since May 2010. The final number determines what game the shortcut launches.

So, more recently, the Steam desktop shortcuts are internet shortcuts, and Steam is, technically, the protocol.

However, both types of my shortcuts work fine so I can't explain why yours don't. Somehow, your OS isn't recognizing Steam as an 'internet' protocol. You may have adjusted OS settings after installing Steam. If that's the case, you may want to re-install Steam (you don't have to re-download the game files...just make sure you re-install Steam to the same directory...there's some help in Valve's support section for re-installation).
