there new update is disgusting. This 2-d approach is terrible, and the colors to choose from just make me dizzy. Is there a plus side to this? maybe like less ram consumption, or stuff like that? Also, when a friend is steaming me (I.M. through steam, don't get wrong idea) and im looking at another steam window, i.e. server window, games list, steam completely exits. I mean this is pathetic.
BTW, any new yorkers smell that awful stuff. I thought my HS would give us the day off around 10:00.

Seems like another putrid update to Steam (pun ever-so-slightly intended). It looks absolutely horrible now. And as for improved performance, less memory usage or any of that - I highly doubt it, that would require Valve to program efficiently, something they appear to be allergic to. My I9300's CSS performance has dropped over 25% since I bought it a year and a half ago, and despite reformats and driver updates galore, Steam game performance keeps on tanking. Same with my Compaq, and even my old 7422GX that's still laying around here. Just reformatted it yesterday, installed the latest Cats and everything, and performance is still far worse than it was when I bought HL2 back in February '05 (even with CC and HDR off). When any reasonable company would have been using this time to improve and optimize their code, Valve makes it sloppier and sloppier with every update. And it isn't just on my machines - look at the Steam forums. They've managed to make Counter-Strike 1.6 slow down 9800XTs. Absolutely pathetic, if you ask me.

i just updated my steam and all i have to say is "WOW". wow, wtf is wrong with the ppl at valve? they have a good thing and valve probably doesnt want to have to get rid of the employees so what do they do? they make the employees think of new ideas to make steam "better"...well i think that its jsut plain stupid and that they should change it back to the old steam otherwise they might start to lose some customers
-
I just might use the new support button to go look at the forums -
As much as I didn't like it, I thought it was okay.
-
Meh, I don't mind it at all.. Minimalist look is always good IMO.
-
Like I said in another post, I'm not a fan of Steam. It's really a shame, because Valve makes HL2, which is a pretty good game. But Steam is just terrible. Anything I have to run in the background just to make something else run is something that I don't like. I have enough running processes as it is.
-
i hate the new interface
-
I hate all versions of Steam. I've never been too fond of valve either. They make half way decent games sometimes, but the programing of their products is awful. I keep steam disabled as much as I can, also. I dont need it eating up my system resources.
-
I HATE YOU STEAM! I want to kill you! Now let me bash you while I keep using you!
... Is something wrong with this topic or is it me? If you want HL2 and you hate steam so badly, for god sakes buy the upcomign xbox 360 version...
You're being just like the Windows bashers.
I HATE YOU MICROSOFT. I ONLY HAV E 20n PRODUCTS OF YOURS BUT I HATE YOU DEARLY
If the update sucks, then ya, whine about it. But if you've hated steam the entire time... Why use it? -
The update compleltly crashed steam. Steam won't load up anymore. I have tried everything. I reinstalled and installed anew. SAME PROBLEM.
Now I have to reformat to play my CSS.
IS THERE any other program people use to play CSS?
Gamespy only has 100 people on it... -
Steam, I had no care for. Not bad, not good. But it eats up around 30MB of emory for me. And I have a serious memory prob for some reason...
-
Well if it really sucks so bad, get the Xbox 360 version of Half Life and Counterstrike...
Don't use something if you just hate it. -
I don't mind steam at all; makes it easy to buy+download games right away.
And, I just leave it closed unless I wanna play a steam game anyways; as soon as I'm done playing, I close it again. -
But really, im having some problems as well. For instance, when someone sends me a steam IM the whole thing closes, and i dont get to see the message. Its pretty bad.
-
Zellio, didnt comments like that get you banned for a little bit?
For some reason I find Steam behaves a little better in a linux environment over windows. Who would have guessed -
I agree that the new skin thing looks terrible... I do like the guest pass idea though. I also hate how they made Garry's Mod is something you have to buy now... It used to be free...
-
Actually I got banned because someone was posting about me in another forum and I kept insulting them.
But ya, keep crying about Steam. -
Yeah I really don't like the new look, I've never liked steam all the much, the only time I liked Steam was when I went from CS 1.5 to CS 1.6 and the graphics looked a bit better. I started to really hate steam when back in the day half the time the friend list didn't work. Also it just sucks to have the program running in the background. I don't know about you but it seems to take up more ram now. I can't remember how much ram it took before, but now it's around 16s to low 20s, if you use the arrow to make it smaller when it only list the game it cuts the ram usage down to around 6-8 mb of ram. The only feature that I can tell is the game pass thing that I was reading about it on the weekend, so I'm happy that I have a game pass to give out. For the people that don't have it or don't know what it is, it lets you send a game for someone to trial for few days. Right now the only game supported it DOD:Source. So I'm gonna give it to a friend on the weekend, so that's pretty cool I guess.
-
BTW - I havent seen the steam update, I quit when they did the map and price update to CS:S. -
I love HL2. I hate Steam. I have to use Steam to play HL2. Valve doesn't give me a choice. SO I can not just "choose" not to use it. Unless you have a valid alternative for me that doesn't involve waiting for an "upcoming" game, that doesn't prevent me from using decent controls (mouse/keyboard for a fps), and which doesn't involve spending $400 on hardware.
If you can offer a good solution for those, then I might be able to look past the fact that I already paid for one copy of the game, which would be wasted then. -
Take the illegal Hl2 version
I totally agree with all you guys that complain about steam. I've got the same problems since i bought Hl2 episode1 -
Steam's not so bad, I mean I don't like the interface but I can't complain about the games. I like CS:S and HL2 DM. Now if only they'd fix some of the known bugs in the system, like the buddy list...
-
I agree that the new UI looks crappy.
However, I don't really hate Steam, I like the idea of buying games without having to go to store or pay for stupid handing/delivery fees.

Oh I laugh as valve implements another dire and pointless update to something that doesn't need it instead of concentrating on the problems that actually matter.
Man I'm glad I spent that £10 on WoW instead of CS:S! -
Upon further review, the Gator has decided to give the new Steam interface two thumbs down.
-
After that first free guest pass for DoD:s, do you have to start buying guest passes for your friends and family? Or are they free?

Despite all the hype created in this thread, I can't say I find the new interface all that different. It simply looks like Valve refreshed the look of the interface slightly. Everything is in the same place from what I can tell. And I like the little arrow key in the top right to switch back and forth between the full + mini modes (I only use the mini mode, but I think the easy switching is nice anyway).
Am I missing something? -

Hey i just updated.
Its not bad, its pretty good, I like the minimal design!
I like the new UI! -
i dont see a difference other than appearance and this new guest pass. I still dont understand what the big deal is.... = X
-
I hate STEAM. I just hate it.
-
Ah look I'm sorry I was mean on Steam, it's just when someone hands me an AK47, I tend to go nuts and mow down anything that moves. Especially in DeathMatch type games. Lets play on a traditional, slower paced server next time.
-
jeez...why's everyone complaining about the new steam? It's not much different except it looks neater!
What's bad about it, I can't tell the difference!
steam, steam, steam
