I was thinking about getting the asus G73JH when it was released, but ended up changing my mind due to wanting a decent upgrade over my desktop 9800 gtx. My question is, can we expect mobile graphics card updates sometime before the end of the summer? Something that would give me more power then the mobile 5870?

Thank you, and sorry if this was answered before, i did, do some research, and didnt find anything

Probably not summer, maybe Autumn (Fall), or maybe even early Winter. I think NVIDIA is having a hard time trying to reduce the power consumption on Fermi, and bring down the heat.

I am in the same position as the OP. I am going to wait till summer/fall before I upgrade. Just have to wait and see whats coming out.

It'll be a while before ATI significantly updates its mobile GPU's, considering that the 5800 series is still pretty new.

On the other hand, as Shadow mentioned, Nvidia is likely having a hard time capturing the performance of Fermi and shrinking it into a reasonably mobile package that doesn't set itself on fire like the dreaded 8600M series. It's just way too hot and power hungry.

My suggestion is to upgrade soon to a laptop with a GDDR5-equipped HD5870/5850 or wait until Q3 (supposedly) and see how mobile Fermi turns out.

i'm quite sure it will turn out to be the most roasting GPU's ever... get a 5870... best option :D

I'm not looking to get Nvidia next time, but who knows ati might come out with a 5970. It might not be like the desktop version but maybe an overclocked 5870?

How long do you plan to wait? I don't think it's far fetched to believe HD6870 Mobile will be released end of this year or beginning of next. My impression from the leaked tid bits, ATi may attempt for a 6xxx release end of this year right when Nvidia finally manages to release GTX480 with good supply and FERMI Mobile.

Alienware will have CF HD5870 soon so get that. Even if FERMI Mobile turns out to satisfy Nvidia fans, I don't think it will make you any less happy with the CF HD5870s.

I'm planning to wait till around fall/winter. It's bad company 2 that makes me want to upgrade since I have to play with all medium
    /low shadows @ 30fps.

If you don't want to wait, even though BC2 annoys me, I played it for 2 hours straight today with ALL settings high, I've set the .ini to force DX11 only with HBAO on, and I swear, a steady 45 FPS the entire time. Sometimes 50+

Man my gun really sucks. I still have only 3 hours logged on this game and the ONLY time I get a kill is when I pick up a gun on the ground and use that instead
    - Well exaggerating. But if I get a kill with my default gun, yeah the other guy kills me too. So lame.

BC2 is almost like an MMO, start off really horrid and the only way to rank up is to live your life in the game for a while...Everyone else with way better guns, more armor etc... just raping you. My games were 7/6, 2/8 and 4/3. On the 4/3 game I shot at probably 20 people who didn't die cause apparently my bullets are like a nice wind to their face.

Hmm, looks like I was wrong. There already seems to be talk of a GTX 480M in the Alienware and Clevo forums...

The only thing that might be coming out this summer is dual 5870's. Nvidia may ship something, but I doubt it'll be mostly based on Fermi if it is, and they still have major power usage issues to sort out. I wouldn't recommend buying Nvidia for at least a year unless you absolutely have to have hardware PhysX or CUDA.

I doubt you will find something with a "decent upgrade" enough in the mobile market this year. Basically you would have to rely on SLI or CrossFire configurations, which are not equivalent to double power in all cases.

I think for next few months Nvidia will focus on releasing their desktop mainstream line, like GTX460 (early june) and probably the GTX485 ( 512core, sometime in the next quarter), i doubt we will see anything from nvidia in the mobile market soon, my guess is Q4 for some refresh of the G92 that might be close to 5870, but i doubt we will fermi in laptops in 2010.

    sorry to butt in..
@ rl2e i saw that and thats what fueled my question,

so I know ati won't be releasing any new series soon, but what about
the mid range gaps? will they be releasing the 5850s 5770s 5750s?
I mean I know those cards are theoretically out but is it manufactures fault
or is it something to do w/ supply

oh and is there any chance that dell will bring back the 57xx to the studio xps
    in the summer?
