I plan on buying the game, but i heard in some large scale battles it brings some of the best systems to their knees. Is this true, and will the laptop in my signature be able to run it smoothly?

Your laptop will run it fairly smoothly. I play the game on my MBP (look at sig) at 1440x900 with all settings max except I have shadows on low and AA turned off. Your GFX card might not be quite as powerful, but I'd bet you can hit many of the same settings.

When maps get very large and congested with units, it is possible that you will hit the 2GB memory limit (this has nothing to do with the amount of physical memory you have installed, it is a software issue). If you do, the game will crash.

This is more common with Vista because it virtualizes the game, using up more memory.

If you have XP, you'll be better off. (Although I've been fine running it in Vista)

So far I have not played on a map large enough to hit the 2GB limit.

I've played it on an Inspiron 1705 (17" laptop)

    T7200
    2GB 667 RAM
    Geforce 7900

And I can say that I wasn't able to play on max settings with a playable frame rate, I was playing at 1920x1200 though.

I'm sure you can play smoothly if you lower the settings down, but if you play on the largest maps with max AI then don't count on it being smooth all the time.

Also the 7900 is faster then the 8600, however what the game really requires is a fast processor.
