Hey guys ive heard from friends that the recently launched laptops with chip sets of ATI HD 4650 graphics are "test graphics", i asked them what this meant, and they said that some of the laptops that have the new ATI 4650 is just something like a "test run", to see if it works good or not, and next year the company's would re-visit those laptops and improve on them?
is this a load of crap? or could it be true? im considering about purchasing a laptop soon, but if this is true, i might think about purchasing it later on. I am a gamer, so i do not want to be disappointed wen i purchase a laptop, and at the end, the graphics not meeting my requirements.

I never heard about that. From the benchmarks I have, the 4650 seems a pretty decent card, a bit slower than a 9700M GTS.

Your friend is a tool.
He's pretending to know stuff which he doesn't. The HD4650 is a great card

I've never heard of that before either. I know about the ES (engineering sample) cards (or chips) which are used for test runs by the manufacturer but there is no way you will find that in commercial laptops. ESs usually are like beta products meant to be used as demonstrators but can be very unstable and dangerous since they haven't undergone through the final quality control procedure. Also ESs are not covered by the warranty. After all, the HD 4000 Mobility series have been announced and shown since beginning of January 2009 and only now the first laptops are starting to appear. I think ATI will take the lead in terms of performance/price.
So if you are looking for a laptop with this type of cards to be afraid to consider it as an option. -
No way it's that fast.

According to notebookcheck.com the HD 4650 should be between the 9700M GT and the 9700M GTS if they are all equipped with GDDR3 memory. But we need these laptops to be more available and people to benchmark them.

...well maybe you friend is talking about the desktop counter parts like 4770 ...there were rumors that ATI will launch new chips in 40nm for laptops (like 4770M and 4890M) but however is not confirm yet.
