Recently, while playing TF2 and BF2, I noticed unusual choppy performance. In TF2, mostly during gunfights, but sometimes randomly out of gunfights and stuff, my FPS would drop to 20s and sometimes 10s and below 10, and it get's really annoying. It seems to happen when a lot of players are around, but even then, it seems to happen randomly, or that's the way it seems to me. I don't recall this problem with TF2 and BF2 when my laptop had vista 64bit with the same Nvidia drivers. In BF2, the choppy performance happened once when I was randomly near players (I was playing in a high ping server, which I normally don't. could that be why?)

and now i just got cs source, and it lags like tf2 does sometimes too.

Does anyone else have the same problems? I installed the newest official WHQL Nvidia driver for my 64bit win7 and Nvidia 9600M GT as well as the newest audio drivers for my computer. However, I stuck with generic windows drivers for everything else. Is this just a win7 performance issue or a driver issue? (maybe I need to install all the drivers instead of using generic windows ones?)

I tried googling the tf2 problem, and I did as much as I could, including setting all settings to lowest, disk defragmentation, turning on/off multicore settings, and I had no success.

Do you have AA or AF enabled?

What max temps are you getting?

Also check that you arent running Power saver profile in windows.

AA is enabled at 4x when I first got tf2 and played it. AF was also on at 2x i think when I first got it. no problems at that time

now, with AA and AF at 4x, 2x, or even off, I get problems.

max temps are around 75-80, and I tried running on balanced and high laptop profiles

note: I think the problems come from internet lag, but how do I check this?

Network latency != graphical frame rate.

What are your temperatures when this happens? Download HWMonitor and let it run in the background when you game. When you're done, let us know what the maximum CPU and GPU temperatures are. It could be overheating resulting in clock speed throttling.

I don't overclock my GPU at all, and based on rivatuner, my max temps goes to 80.

it's plugged in high performance power mode. vsync off. antivirus is the same one, and no scans running in the background except antivirus guard and firewall. I turned off the firewall and it still didn't work.

I said I tried reducing settings already and it didn't work.

the main problem is in tf2. is a 9600M GT enough for tf2? it should be right?

I didn't have that many problems with it when I played tf2 in vista.

but no one here has any similar problems? I googled it and it seems like a lot of people had tf2 problems but no one here has them?

Source games like L4D and TF2 rely heavily the cpu, but a Geforce 9600m GT should have no problems running the games you mentioned.
But i heard that the Nvidia drivers for Windows 7 has some problems, but it should be fixed in latest builds.

I think as long as you install the latest chipset, graphic card and audio drivers it shouldent matter that you use generic windows drivers for the rest.

The 9600m GT should run source games fine. BF2 should run smoothly on high settings

Have you tried using www.laptopvideo2go.com drivers?

No TF2 problems on the weaker 9500M GS over here; posting High/Very High settings at 1366x768, rarely dip below 20.

wow, that's great. I remember when I first got TF2 and played it on my back then vista laptop. Barely any problems, and everything was on high with AA on.

And nope, I haven't tried any laptop2go video drivers yet. I'm using the newest Nvidia drivers though.

I had some tf2 issues on my slower comp, it was mainly with pyro's and the lag from high texture flame.

What CPU do you have? Tf2 goes into the 20's and some times as low as 10 for me because it's just too much on the CPU for me.

get the 186.81 drivers from NVDIA website... they work well with 9600M GT and also u could have network lagg causing these problems...

    I have a intel C2D P8400 (2.26ghz)
i'm also using the newest 9600M GT drivers from nvidia.
I think my issues are network ones, but I'm not sure. Maybe I need to install ethernet or network drivers or whatever for windows 7 instead of using default generic windows ones?

Hi! I might have the solution. I had the same problem, so I tried making free space on my C drive, defragging, etc the lot. I checked my ping, it was very low all the time. Then I realised, the only change I have made is update to the latest driver from Nvidia website:

    Version:
    195.62 WHQL
    Release Date:
    2009.12.04
    Operating System:
    Windows Vista, Windows 7
    Language:
    English (UK)
    File Size:
    116 MB

I now am DOWNGRADING to my previous driver!!!, and Im sure that will do the trick! I never had any problems with BF2, only now when I updated my graphics driver it happened.

I have Asus G50V Laptop with Geforce 9700m GT 512MB graphics card.

    Hope this would have helped!

Mr Cookie, I have actually cleaned my fan last night, and yes it worked, then I looked at your post today.. lol :) So yes, I can agree, that IS the solution!

It actually didn't look that dirty, only a very thin layer of brown dust on the fan itself, I wouldn't think that little bit of dust could make such difference. As I have my laptop only for 8 months, honestly I wouldn't think that was the case.

Just for interest, I contacted Asus support, they promptly reply within 24 hours an gave me the Asus ( http://support.asus.com/download/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us) website driver download. Not the solution, but Im happy to see that they were quick to respond.

Sounds like a PhysX problem. Every time your install a new gpu driver it sets it to enable. Not sure if the 9600 supports PhysX but

    Open Nvidia control panel->Click PhysX->Tick Disable->Click Apply->Enjoy Gaming...(hopefully) :p

no problems with PhysX here... anyways all 8000 series cards onwards supports PhysX... it was a overheating problem... those were absurd temps...

my laptop temperature goes from 80s to 90s and sometimes to 95, so I'm thinking about cleaning the fans. I have to find a guide though or look up how to do it.

As for the PhysX thing, I think that might be what's making me lag more. My default video drivers did not have PhysX, but the ones I use now do.

yeah i know but maybe turning it on in Nvidia changes something. I actually think it's a server thing with TF2. Some servers make my fps go down more.
