hi, just wondering on what u guys think the lifespan of the 8600/8700m GT is going to be. is it already going obsulete? i have an 8700gt and i play the popular online shooters and they play fine, but theres occassionally a game i can't play at decent settings (i.e. MASS EFFECT). i see games coming down the line this year and i want to play it when the time comes (starcraft 2, left 4 dead, etc).. so, when is the 8600/8700gt's not going to be sufficient anymore? i have no problems with most games but mass effect did cause me to think twice about when i'll need an upgrade.

what ya guys think about it?

    thx

For gaming ,about 1 year till you`ll have to drop to low settings, right now MED settings run ok with the most demanding games.

Wait for the Montevina to be launched and then upgrade...or if you can , wait till next year for NEHALEM, they`ll be some 15-30% faster...

What kind of settings/resolution are you trying Mass Effect at?

I would expect the 8700M GT to run it decently.

try to stay below 1280x800 if u can, 1024x768 would be optimal, its lower bandwidth is better at lower resolutions only

mass effect: lowest resolutions above 800x600 (so like 1024x768) with everything off, everything lowest. (AND IM OC'ing).. performance is still lame

in terms of games in general, i guess its what i want to get out of the game (thankfully im not a graphics hog) and what games i play.

hopefully ill be good for the rest of this year tho, i really want left 4 dead

Not a single thing I cannot run reasonably well, and I could use a processor and RAM upgrade.

I haven't tried mass effect, but honestly I cannot see it being incapable as many others have tried on lesser GPUs and gotten decent results.

(note in the other thread you started, someone with an XPS 1530 with an 8600m GT was doing much better than you are on HIGH, I really think something is wrong or perhaps you need some tweaking/maintenance)

The 8800m's are nice, but not a requirement.

I think the 8700m users can quite easily wait a bit unless you MUST have 1920x1200 @ 60fps.

Clearly there's something wrong but not with the fundamental capability of your video card, which falls far above the minimum requirements. Try the old faithfuls - uninstall, clean, run spybot, anti-virus, reinstall, etc...

left 4 dead should be no problem also.
