I own a hd 5650 and am having troubles running newer games maxed out, and would like to be able to buy a new laptop and keep it for a couple years.
im thinking of getting the m18x with dual 6990ms for 2500 dollars
or
the sager 8150 with the 580m gtx for 1900
how long will these laptops last maxing games out, and do you think the extra 600 is worth it for crossfire.
so far im leaning toards the m18x due to raw horsepower, but I want this thing to game for at least two years, do you think its possible?

What?
Why don't you go with the single 6990M? Costs less than 580M and around the same performance?
AMD Radeon HD 6990M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Ultra for like a year, and Ultra-high or high for another (depending on the game and what settings you want) -
I'd just get a M17x R3 with a HD6990M. Laptops should be mobile IMO, go with the 17.3" screen.
And I'd go with a single HD6990M because it's faster than the 580M and it's cheaper.
There are more threads about people having issues about Cross-Fire than their are issues about drivers, vBIO from both Nvidia and AMD combined. Cross-Fire is just not worth the hassle. Half the time your 2nd card won't be used to it's full potential.
- Nearly every single issue on Guru3D for AMD hardware is related to cross-fire issues, from both mobile and desktop users.
- Almost all the issues Nvidia users have on Guru3D are related to SLI
- Multi-GPU is just not worth the hassle. Almost all the games are made to be cross-platform which have no optimizations for multi-GPU. This isn't the fault of AMD and Nvidia. IF a game just doesn't have proper multi-GPU support, you're screwed. By the time the developer patches the game for multi-GPU support everyone else has stopped playing the game and bored with it.
Save the money and you can upgrade the HD6990M to the upcoming HD7xxx series with 28nm architecture next year. -
I thought u were against upgrading your laptop because it wasn't economical?
-
im getting a large sum of cash in september, and want to play games maxed out for two years.
-
i could go for the 6990m and save some cash but id have to buy through xoticpc.com and im not sure if they ship to canada and how much shipping ill cost.
thats why i went with a canadian reseller that operates out of mycity, i figure quick delivery but thing is they only offer the 580m gtx and their prices are a bit high compared to xoticpc. -
Could try Malibal, pretty sure they ship to canada. I don't know if they have the exact same system though.
-
Xotic is a great company, but I'm not sure if the ship to Canada either.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
xotic ships to canada.
crossfire 6990ms give you a practically 100% performance increase
If you have the dough, I would go for the m18x -
sounds like you are student and getting a loan of some form. Have you thought about a desktop @ $700 ( that will BLOW away any laptop gaming computer) and a $100 monitor. When I was in college I moved three times and almost never was my laptop moved from my desk that I used it for at any place I lived.
I could have saved thousands of dollars having a desktop that was far mor powerful ( and almost as mobile for that matter as my first Clevo).
It is just something to look at, especially now they have travel boxes that re tiny and gorgeous and are massively more powerful than any notebook. -
Of course I'm not a graphicswh*re, so running most new games at medium settings on 1080p is enough for me. -
ha I swear I knew someone would assume im gettinga student loan. call me phychic lol
no its actually from the disability tax credit, I was recently diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia which kinda sucks. theirs a big stigmatism in society for people with schizophrenia. but the medication is very helpful in getting rid of most delusions and voices.
maybe I should explain my situation better.
Im curently living on something called AISH that gives me 1188 a month from the government, my rent is 400. that leaves me with 788 for food and other household items each month. doesnt leave much room for luxs.
im getting 6300 dollars back from the government half way through september.
now money is very hard for me to save up for, and it would probably take me a year to save 6300.
so given that information what should i do as a laptop solution, should i stick to medium graphics for now and wait until games simply dont run, or upgrade early to something like the m18x
what would you do in my situation?
do you think a vaction to mexico is a better idea when the temps hit -30?
do you think I should buy a car to get around?
And how should or can I budget my money better? -
Hmmmm...laptop, vacation, transportation...I'm voting the car; that's if diagnosed PS's are allowed to have a license to drive. FYI, TMI for NBR, IMO.
-
Is it paranoid if its real? Not to p$$ in your cherios but I really wish the govt would stop giving money away. IMO its the reason why we are in this mess in the first place. Lets see society as we know it about to collapse but lets keep giving money away...
-
I feel bad for you, but you should have let us think that it was a student loan.
You shouldn't be buying a $2k+ laptop, imo. -
-
let me explain, AISH is given to canadians and canada isnt in a financial mess. when applying for aish you must have a severe metal or physical ilness that prevents you from working aka money.
so your saying to the people that are unable to work due to causes beyond their control and a roll of the dice in life that they should not be entitled to a life. they should not have shelter, they should not have food, they should not be what? alive.
to me you said, this person deserves to die. like I said your a real peice of work
so to respond, I hope you die early in life aswell.
and to hockeymass.
I think your right its not really worth it now is it? -
Wow some of you guys need to relax, bashing someone for something that is out of their control is utterly ridiculous and childish.
I say if you want a gaming device, get a cheaper unit or get a $700 desktop and not worry about your future gaming needs for some time. -
I just wish people understood what is coming. I'm fine with paying out $$ if your not borrowing to do it. -
If it were me, I would get a decent gaming machine, probably something with a 560m. Will probably run you about 1100-1200 and you can put the rest of it aside for something else.
-
for 1500 i can get a 8150 with the 6990m and just save the rest of the cash for an emergency situation.
how long will the 6990m last though? does anyone have predictions based on past gpus? -
A 6990M is considered a high-end mobile gpu (but a whole lot cheaper and same if not better performance than Nvidia counterpart the 580M).
It highly depends on what kind of games you will be playing down the road, at what resolution, etc.
Look at the laptop in my signature.
It's from late 2008. The gpu is 9600m GT gddr3 (considered -mid range for it's time), and I still find it very useful in numerous new games that recently came out.
To be honest, I'm not a real gaming buff.
I play games that are interesting to me, and those aren't in abundance (Crysis 1 & 2 aren't one of those games... or Metro - or majority of FPS games).
The last games I played would be Darksiders, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Alice- Madness Returns, and I only tried out Heroes of Newereth (the MMO) for a day before I got bored.
All of those games run fine on my laptop with maxed out details or set on 'high' (and if a game has 'ultra' settings, those aren't that different from 'high' to be honest unless we are talking about a graphical feature you would notice - most don't).
But, if I would have to hazard a guess... I think that 6990M would last you about 3 or 4 years (or longer - depending on what kind of games you play) on games which are more graphically intense.
After the second year, you might have to reduce the details from 'Ultra' to 'High' (depending on how optimized the game is to be honest and what kind of a game is it).
As for those who are complaining about your condition, I would ignore them.
Given how most individuals who have no problems never even try to imagine themselves in a situation of a disabled person, they cannot imagine what life is for such people (I'm not disabled myself, but imagined myself as such and met several individuals who were unfortunate to find themselves in a similar situation).
However, I would also advise that if you don't exactly have too much money at your disposal, then it would be prudent to get something affordable while at the same time powerful (so you don't find yourself in a situation where you lack money because you spent it all on a new gaming laptop).
Reflex Notebook Canada - Your Source for Sager Notebooks and Laptops in Canada
That's the link for Sager laptops in Canada.
The Sager NP8150 modified with 6990M and Win 7 Home Premium (everything else on stock settings), costs $1694 CA.
Eliminating the OS (which I would personally do since I prefer doing the OS install myself) from the equation frees up $80 (and you can easily put 12GB RAM instead).
Or if you go for both the OS and RAM, then it's $1754 CA (not that much higher).
Ultimately configure it as you see fit. But upgrading to over 12GB RAM for now is not really necessary for games (3ds Max users such as myself though are in a different ball-park), and I would stick with the 2630QM (it's quad, SB and coupled with 6990M, it should be quite nice). -
try to guess this one -
i am being insulting so now that blows?
torn between two laptops, help me decide
