Pretty much anything that is not in the "system" category u can safely turn off and not have instability problems. In task manager, under processes, sort them out by user name. All the ones with ur name, aka the person logged on, are just things that u use, and have nothing to do with the OS.
But an easier way is to get more memory, because by closign down processes u save memory. If there are any processes that use up cpu time, then those u can easily identify and close down. -
But, some of the things under your name control important functions....like...antivirus/firewall/antispyware programs or your mouse sometimes.
Yes, its safe to experiment. -

I'd suggest trying our tune-up guide:

Works for me every time. -
There are some Task Manager doesnt allow you to turn off. (I dont mean the usual confirmation "Blah blah might cause instabilities, are you sure?", but real "This process is a part of Windows and can't be turned off" sort of messages. So it's safe to try to disable everything. Just be aware that you might shut down functionality you find useful (such as explorer.exe...
)
Other than that don't expect to gain any noticeable performance. You free up a bit of memory, which might make a *slight* difference on low memory systems (but only a slight difference because these processes data would probably be paged out anyway, so they wouldn't take up system RAM while playing CSS). And if you're not short on memory to begin with, it won't make a scrap of difference. They don't really use CPU time, so you won't get any improvement there either. -
But it just makes it look so....clean...

For a start, go to Start>Run and type in services.msc
From there you can disable background windows tasks that you don't need. This is a list of services you can safely disable without disrupting your system.
Computer Browser - DISABLE
Error Reporting Service - DISABLE
Indexing Service _ DISABLE
Net Logon - DISABLE
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing - DISABLE
Network Location Awareness - DISABLE
Network Provisioning Service- DISABLE
Performace Logs and Alerts - DISABLE
QOS RSVP - DISABLE
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager - DISABLE
Remote Registy Service - DISABLE
Smart Card - DISABLE
SSDP Discovery Service - DISABLE
System Restore Service - DISABLE
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - DISABLE
Telnet - DISABLE
Uniterriuptable Power Supply - DISABLE
Universal Plug and Play device host - DISABLE
Web Client - DISABLE
Windows Time - DISABLE
Wireless Zero Configuration - DISABLE
WMI Performance Adapter - DISABLE
Try this first, and check the page file usage in windows before and after. You can save up to 40mb of memory by disabling these services.
As for other applications, best thing to do is to CTRL/ALT/DEL and make a note of the tasks that are currently running. Usually I just type the name into google (ie. qttask.exe) and check some sites to see if it can be safely disabled. To disable Start>Run type msconfig. In startup tab just uncheck the box next to it to disable it running at startup.
Currently I have 28 processes running when I log into Windows. Don't know how many other folks have around here, be interesting to have some sort of poll on the subject. -
yea thanks for the responds guys. i learned the hard way when i closed the desktop and short cuts, thats why I asked. thanks for the help!
