Wolfenstein 3D was out before Doom, and played in a similar manner. Though it was never quite as wildly popular. Not that it did too badly, either.

Yeah, Doom was not the first, but definitely the title that conformed the initial FPS's as we know them today.

Wolf3D and Doom were both ground-breaking, imo. Doom brought us LAN parties though.

Good old Doom LAN's. My favourite was Doom 2 personally. And yes, truly a great game.

    I have that collection.

    Whew, I'm not a fool, I'm a gamer!

Well, some may say I'm a foolish gamer.

    :D

Now, if I could just get Rise of the Triad (ROTT) to run on my system...

Half-Life was in 1998, not sure if Counter-Strike was released on the same year or not. Doom was released in 1993.

    cs is fairly modern.
doom wasn't the first, but without it, we won't have the word 'frag'.

    LOL. :D

Anyway, Doom is amazing. One of the best games ever, and one of the oldest FPS games out there. (With the exception of Wolf 3D, Marathon, etc).

I think Doom was the first FPS to use multiple levels on a single map... things could be above or below you... But yeah, Wolfenstein was around first and put out by the same company... I still don't think W3D was technically the first FPS, but by all practical means it was.

Also... anyone else remember the mod that turned all the big pink guys into Barney... I loved running around with the chainsaw and God Mode in that.

    According to Wikipedia,

    Doom came out in 1993.

Castle Wolfenstein was introduced in 1991.

Technically it was Maze war (1973) and Spasim (1974). But W3D introduced the FPS to the mass gaming market and became the foundation for all others to evolve and become what they are today.

Erm...no. Pilotwings was released around the late 80's or 1990-ish wasn't it? I'm too lazy to look it up. Besides, I already posted the two 'first' accepted FPS games.

That's fine except that 'ever' has not happened yet. :p

    Thanks for playing, tho'.

Nope, it was Duke Nuken 3D. Before Duke Nuken, all "3D" FPS maps were actually 2D.

    Signal is absolutley correct here.

I am looking at the five 3.5 floppies that I own for Ultimate Doom, what a beast DOS game.
I also have that old school Duke Nuken 3d 1.3d Uncensored Edition, who knows what I am talking about?..."Shake it baby", lol.
