My nephew told me yesterday he was watching the football though his Samsung Q210 connected via hdmi to his Panasonic plasma TV, he pulled out the hdmi cable while the notebook was still on and his notebook is now dead-ish.

He gets the power light, but no display or signs of life, he has done the remove battery and press the power button trick, but it`s still dead.

He has left the battery out all night, but it`s still the same.

He`s pulled the hdd, I`ve told him to pull the dvd and swap the memory sticks one at a time, but i reckon it`s the motherboard has gone.

    So be careful with hdmi.

I suppose he had unplugged it loads of time without problems as well.

It`s a few years old now , it`s just an T5750 and an Nvidia 9200m but is only 12" and it`s nice an portable, There is a used motherboard on ebay for £60

EDIT : the funny thing is i asked if hdmi was hot swappable on avforum over a year ago.

The hdmi socket is 5volt , maybe that line has failed on the motherboard.

    hmmmm...

wonder how that happened. wonder if it got stuck on outputting to monitor 2 only.

did he ever try plugging the hdmi cable back into the laptop to see if the tv got a signal? Or has he tried hitting windows key + P if he's on windows 7 (you have to hit it twice the first time to get it to change to a different projector)

Pulling a plug isn't supposed to kill your notebook.

Unplugging TV from the outlet can kill your TV. Long time ago we had a portable TV and then one time after unplugging it died.

    So be careful with outlets.

Oh and I had a light bulb die on me. It happened some time after I turned on the light and left it like that, emitting light. Then it just died.

So be careful with turning the light on.

You sure he didn't pull it at a weird angle and possibly broke a trace on the board?

If he broke a connection , just the hdmi would be dead, not the notebook , now if it shorted the 5volt as i mentioned before that could kill the notebook.

unplugging the hdmi cable was not the cause of the issue. there may have been some hardware defect, possibly related to the hdmi connector. doesn't mean other people should avoid unplugging hdmi during use. hdmi is hot swappable.

there's always a chance that you'll hit the power button and your battery will explode. doesn't mean you should avoid hitting the power button. if your battery explodes, you can't really fault yourself for hitting the power button. the implication is that there was some degree of user error, "I should not have unplugged the hdmi cable while the machine was powered on". That is simply incorrect.
