i've narrowed my search for a laptp for school to the asus g1s and the upcoming lenovo t61p. i'm sure the 8600gt in the g1s will be plenty of power for me, but if the nvidia 1500 fx (which i hear will be in the t61p) is better, then i'll go with that.

    any comments are greatly appreciated.

Actually I've been hearing that the T61p should come with the Quadro FX 570M, which is based either off the 8400M GT or 8600M GS. In either case, considering the 8600M GT is in a league of its own compared to the 8400M GT or 8600M GS, and considering the fact that workstation graphics cards decrease in performance in games by a small amount, there's no doubt that the 8600M GT will be faster than the Quadro FX 570M. In fact, the performance difference should be substantial.

Don't think the T61p sucks, though, the Quadro FX 570M will be able to play any modern game.

i was actually set on buying the t61p when it comes out. i was going to get the t61, but i need a higher resolution. i saw the g1 at best buy and i rememberes seeing something about the santa rosa refresh, and i think it looks better. it's bigger, but size is not a concern of mine as long as the screen isn't a 17". i'll at least be future-proofing my rig with the 8600gt because i'll have my laptp for at least 5 years.

Well, I don't know about that part :p
5+ years is an awful long time in the computer world, esp. for laptops and a mid-range GPU.

    For point of reference:
NVIDIA didn't even introduce the Geforce series until 8 years ago.
7 years ago, voodoo 3d was still reigning.
ATI didn't even introduce its Radeon series until 7 years ago.

I wouldn't be expecting to run any new games at decent settings on the 8600M GT even 2-3 years down the road.

if it'll hold out for 2 years i'll be happy. i mainly do object-oriented programming, but i want to be able to play a good game every now and then.

i know this is an old thread, but how much would a non-hardcore games notice the difference between the quadro 570m and the 8600gt? i mainly do coding and object based programming, but i do want some graphics power.

how new is the game? the newer it is, the bigger the difference you will notice (ex. halo 2 i'd say it's noticable, diablo 2 negligent)

the Quadro FX 570M is actually based off the 8600GT and is better optimized for CAD purposes. However, the components used to make Quadro series cards are much better than Geforce cards (they go through more rigorous testing). I wouldn't be surprised if the 570M is on par or greater performing than the G1s using the proper drivers.
