I was recently doing a little spring cleaning and came across a couple of copies of old Counter Strike. These are really old and came bundled with an ATI 8500 AIW that I got rid of. The bundled disk has Counter Strike,Team Fortress Classic, Half Life Uplink. I haven't though about counter strike in ages and only recently looked at using Steam.
Can I update these old versions counterstrike to 1.6 using Steam? If not what are the patches I need to download and install first before I can use Steam on my old Counterstrike copies?
I started to look the answer up on the many websites out there for counterstrike, but saw way more sites than I care to investigate. Which is the best official site? Also, can I update to 1.6 for free?
I was thinking of trying it out on a low end laptop with a ATI x1250, just to see how it does.

I'd be happy to hear the answer to this question as well

if the disk has a serial on it anywhere you could try putting it into steam and seeing if it activates it, i had a old half life 1 disk i got off of ebay for £1, put the code into steam and i got half life one, counterstrike 1.6 and a whole bunch of mods and expansions for it registered to my account ^_^

AFAIK any old WON CS or HL key will give you the full Half Life complete pack with Blue Shift, Opposing Force, etc.
-
Original CS IS CS 1.6 after the updates isn't it? Or am I missing something?
-
CS used to be a free shooter then it was purchased by Valve back in 1997 or 1998 and became the game we know today as 1.6.
Purists consider 1.3 the last true version of Counter Strike, before the addition of the shield and the nerfing of the AWP. -
If you have the CD Key, open Steam and go to the "My Games" tab, and near the bottom you should see "Activate a Product on Steam" Then enter the key and you can download the latest version on Steam and use Steams server to play it. 1.6 is still wildly popular and it's easy to find a server.
I did the same thing with my Half-Life Platinum pack. I don't even need the CD's anymore. -
Thanks everyone, I was able to update on Steam.

Cool,
I want to know that which method you used to update?
so you are enjoying the game. -
I did exactly what Buhdahl said to do. Plus just as Jlbrightbill said once you activate it you will get the full Half Life pack complete with Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Team Fortress classic etc.
I also have another question, but nobody has to address it because its not really a priority.
Does Steam still offer Zombie Panic for HL1 for download. I only see Zombie Panic for HL2. Did they stop offering the mod for HL1? -

They do offer Zombie mod for HL1.
-
When I search for it the HL1 version is not available for download on steam, just screen shots and a link to the designers webpage -

Browse through here I guess, I can't search for you right now because of school blockers. -

I'm a real fan of CS but the game can be very inconsistent to play.
Some days I "rock" - getting easy kills and long range shots no problem, other days I unload whole mags into people (who survive) and they hit me once and I die...
updating old copy of Half-Life Counter-Strike to 1.6
