I recently acquired an IBM Lenovo T61 / 2gb RAM from my new job as my work computer. Since I did not order it, I am trying to verify exactly how much video ram I have. I know the unit has an nvidia quadro nvs 140m as the graphics card. All the specs on the net for that which I have seen says the max video RAM is 256mb.

However, when I run DXDIAG and goto the DISPLAY tab, it says:
    APPROX. TOTAL MEMORY: 512MB

Does that mean this is a 512mb of video memory?

I am only wanting to verify before I decide which game(s) to get to kill time in my spare time.

I would have thought it was 512mb according to DXDIAG but since even the IBM page lists the 140 with a max of 256 I was confused. (Did they start making the 140 with more than 256 at some point I wonder?)

    Thanks!

PS if it helps, this is one of the nicer T61 models with 2gb RAM and a 15" widescreen display.

    Thanks!

Thats probably turbocache; an allocation of your system ram to your vram. To see what you have, right click your desktop > personalize > display settings > advanced settings.

The vram on the card will be under dedicated ram and the shared memory is the memory that can be allocated from your system ram.

I'm pretty sure that the NVS 140M in the T61 only has 128MB of dedicated video memory. Any other number means that shared memory, i.e. memory borrowed from RAM, is also factored in. Also, the NVS is abysmal for gaming, so you're probably going to be stuck playing games from three years ago.

Yes, and being that its similar to the 8400 in performance, gaming on newer games almost isnt an option.

I think these directions are for Vista...but I am running XP sp2 on this unit. I did goto the advanced setting for XP but the only page that shows any memory is under the ADAPTER section and it just says:

    MEMORY SIZE - 512MB.

And just so you know, I am only going to play an MMO, something like WOW or EQ2...which I know I will need reduced settings to play anyway... If I wasn't given the laptop for work and got to go out and buy one, I would have picked up something with a little more punch, but since beggers can't be chosers I am just doing what I can with what I've got.

Hopefully WOW or EQ2 since they are a few years old shouldn't be too demanding that I can't play. Mainly looking for time to kill at nights and in between flights on long layovers.

Hmm...GPU-z fails to load because access is denied for me to open the session manager.

This machine is currently managed but I have a 2nd hd and the ultrabay HD adapter so when I get it, I'll be booting off my own OS and unmanaged. Until then I was just hoping to get some more facts straight about the hardware until I can get the other parts installed.

I hadn't seen GPU-Z before but I am familiar with CPU-Z, thanks for the link!
