Get BOTH ME 1 and ME2, fantastic games and since over 50% of the hype about this series is because of the plot - you will have a huge dosage of awesomeness, by playing from ME1 as a freshman.

There's no excuse for skipping Mass Effect 1.

Plus, after finishing ME1 you can (what means you REALLY should) import your savegame with finished game into ME2, so that decisions from ME1 will make impact on the plot in ME2.

I didnt like masseffect 1 that much, couldnt get into it.

Masseffect 2 however, is very fast paced and funner, looks amazing and runs very well, great story.

I'd recommend playing mass effect 2 first, and if you like the second version then you will most likely like the first one. But the second one is def funner.

But one of the best things about Mass Effect is its story. You can't just skip it. If you really dislike the first one, rush through it. It'll take you about 7-8 hrs if you go straight to the story missions. But it's still a must play.

I really enjoyed ME2 and did not play ME1. ME2 does a good job summarizing what happened in ME1 so you are not lost.

But if I had played ME1 first would have been very awesome.

Anyways, one thing Mass Effect does is allow you to port your character. So play ME1, save that stuff. Play ME2, import your character. You will start off with more money, more resources and your moral meter will be imported also. Meaning more options and choices available to you.

Skipping ME1 story will greatly damage your experience from ME2.

you do miss out some contents in me2( spoiler http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Save_File_Transfer) if you don't import a save. me2 defaults to a 'renegade' me1 playthrough.
you can get save files from the internet but you might not know what's going on in the minor submissions if you skipped me1.
and there is no such word as 'funner'.

Also Mass Effect 1 and 2 have slight differences.

I read resource gathering and exploring planets is decent on Mass Effect 1. Especially with vehicles.

Mass Effect 2 is.... nothing. You go to a console. You choose a planet through a graphical interface. You scan the planet remotely, mouse over planet and when you see indication there is resource, press a mouse button and a probe is sent.
    - Most definitely the most tedious and mindless aspect of the game. But have to do it if you want the upgrades.

not decent, just different. the good thing is you're not required to gather resources, you get all the upgrades/weapons/armour from fallen enemies or stores. and you should have maximum amount of credits by the end.

Not playing Mass Effect 1 may cause some missions to not even show up in Mass Effect 2, just so you know.

It would be like wanting to watch a movie with a squeal (let's say The Matrix and The Matrix 2), but not wanting to watch the first one. You will have no idea what's going on.

If you dont play ME1 before ME2, you die.

You really should play it though.

take your time and play through one. Nearly every quest you do in 1 will have implications in mass effect 2 including additional quests and dialogues and very importantly storyline.

    Theyre both absolutely worth getting

    easy on the spoilers.

I actually enjoyed Mass Effect 1 better than the second one. I feel they made Mass Effect 2 more of a shooting experience to be more mainstream... and they removed the Mako. Scanning for resources seems fun at first, but after a while it'll be as tedious as in Mass Effect 2.

In short, Mass Effect 1 is more RPG'ish than Mass Effect 2.
