I tried to play this game before. I just never got into it. I kept running out of ammo. kept dying from monsters. didnt get very far. I dont understand why i didnt like this game. I was pumped for it. I LOVED OBLIVION. I'm going to give it another try though. I just re installed it and I'm making a new character, However this time around I want to play it the right way. Does anybody know where I can find a good character build? and how to set it up as you level?

Just don't go chasing super-mutant too early on in the game.. you gotta build up some skills before going berserk. Just take it easy - Fallout 3 is best when played E.. A... S.... Y

And eh - don't invest any points in stealth. Other than that, it's all a matter of taste :)

Can't wait for the next expansion myself - done with pretty much everything else the game has to offer (100+ hours).

I think it was a pretty average game other than for the pretty good graphics.

Quests, dialog, adventuring etc are pretty bad compared compared to Fallouts 1 and 2.

Oh, and make sure you do EVERYTHING before finishing the main plot. The game is not open-ended.

this game is so booring .. I played to the point where I got out of the 101 and enter the first city with the atomic bomb in the middle. And that's about it.

not only I didnt know what each of the character improvements does, but there's very little action in the game.

like I invested in heavy weapons skills and what not, and ended up not using that at all. On the second try it turns out that women talk skills is much more beneficial ..

    but good luck anyways

Well, if you don't play and/or finish Fallout then you'll be ill-prepared for when the real post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust hits. I've got my lunchbox and stockpile of teddy bears ready.

    I love this game!! :D

The key here is not quests like in other RPG's... the key is exploration. Use the Fallout Wiki to find the location of the unique weapons early on to make the game easier and more fun.

The game is hard at the beginning because your character is so weak, but it soon gets easier and easier as you get more powerful.

If you have trouble in combat, just use the VATS system, or change the difficulty. Avoid dangerous areas when you are still at a low level. Make sure you pick up the unique weapons early, the Xuanglong Assault rifle, the Eugene Minigun and the Vengeance Gatling laser are important to find.

be a female character when you start
then for the first perk get femme fetal (or whatever) where you do 10% extra damage to male characters since most of the characters you kill are male (raiders, etc)

    then just go from there

don't forget the alien blaster northwest (i think) of the minefield by the power lines

I didn't mind the game until I came across a couple of mission where the description was worded VERY badly. So I'd wander around for an hour before finding the quest objective.

Spending an hour walking around a virtual desert wasteland was.... boring. I realized I didn't have the time to invest in this game that it wanted so I uninstalled. Maybe when I am on hollidays I will play it.

Are you talking about the cave colony? If you find the one 'engineer' kid (someone tells you his name), he can open a secret door that comes out right at the vault entrance. I'm not sure, but you might also be able to hack/lockpick the door. It's on the opposite side of the round, open shelter area.

Being a fan of Oblivion and Morrowind, I find Fallout 3 utterly boring. First person view idea kind of didn't work well, imo, and quests are short and simple (go there, grab that, talk to that guy, convince/shoot him to give you this, etc)

Well Fallout 1 and 2 are still fantastic games despite their age, though I played both of them a year after they came out. I supposed if I played them for the first time now, I'd find them a bit too dated.

I hate to ask - but wanted to be clear... You played the first part only, with no open-ended stuff, no freedom to explore, no weapon choices; the part that's meant just to give you back story and basic gameplay tutorials...

....and then, as the game REALLY starts, you quit, and say it's boring? Of course you haven't used heavy weapons skill yet - you haven't explored any to FIND a heavy weapon!

Really, play the game past the tutorial before you write it off. It's like "I played World of Warcraft till level 3, but quit because I wasn't getting any good loot or quests for other areas..."

Dude the one thing I hate about this game is the same as you: SCARCE AMMO and MONEY. The money is used to buy ammo, hp, and most importantly: repairs. I eventually just gave up and made a melee character and used all my money on stimpacks. It gets a little tougher fighting mass ranged characters with melee though.

I would recommend sticking to the man plot until you get power armor training. Then combats will be a lot easier, and you will have stocked a great ammount of ammo.

I already finished the main plot, but loaded the last save and I am exploring the world. I have stocked MUCH more ammo than I can possibly use, MUCH more money than I can spend and I never run out of food/stimpacks...

Its all about stocking up, I guess...

Uhm... but the game is NOT open-ended. When you finish the main quest (which is quite short BTW), game over!

And although the size of the map is big, the amount of exploration to do is not that big since the north half of the map has no quests IIRC (game was uninstalled and returned for a refund a while ago, so I cannot check).

I just wanted to see the story line, so I used the console to call me up a 1 shot magnum and turned God mode on.

Also, since I'm impatient, I upped my run speed....and my jump height so I could go over things instead of around them.

    -Fallout 3 is amazing-
People just really dont know how to play this game I think. Your level ups you need to add points to your skills (ie repair/medicine/lockpick/small guns/explosives) and also find schematics to MAKE weapons like nuka cola grenade and railgun. This game is so diverse and there are hundreds of quests you just need to find them! Quests can be completed in a variety of dofferent ways. I have beaten the game and started playing through again to get get 100% of the quests and Im still hooked to the game. (MUST HAVE WEAPONS- Lincolns repeater - Terrible Shotgun - Chelsys Ultra SMG - A3-21's plasma rifle) just to name a few. These are not EASY to find and you must choose the right paths and kill the right people! ANd the issue about ammo???I have at least 300 ammo for every weapon I have (beside fatman of course which is also one of the biggest mass destrustion weapons of any game to date) You need to STOCK up and HOARD your findings..effectivness in use of weapons and smarts will have you playing this game for years...trust me..if you think you have discovered 100% of the map and quests...you havent...start on the underground subway systems next!!

For the OP, and others complaining about ammo: Get the SCROUNGER perk and the FORTUNE FINDER perk. Scrounger lets you find more ammo, and Fortune Finder lets you find more caps.

Put points into Small Guns and Repair, also. Those will really be your most important skills (followed by Lockpick, Medicine, and Science). For your first few levels, you'll also want to take the perk that lets you add a point to S.P.E.C.I.A.L.

Only put enough points into Big Guns to be able to wield things like the Fatman. Your Small Guns skill is going to be the most important one, your main weapons are managed with this skill (Assault rifles, long rifles, pistols and shotguns).

The Action Boy/Girl perk is also good, if you use VATS a lot. It gives you more action points which lets you get off more shots and do more damage when using VATS.

I also recommend going female and taking the "Femme Fetale" perk, as somebody else mentioned.

Man, now you all got me fired up to play FO3 and see how it runs on my laptop!

As a fallout 1 and 2 fan I can say this game is good, but not very good....feels so empty even tho' world is larger than that of previous fallouts
And previous parts of the game were "darker" in feel and climate....the third part of the game is just too gory, but not dark
Bethesda should have made more stuff involved in fallout 3, what did all those millions of $ go for?

I must admit that Fallout 3's main story is short and lacking, but I didn't even attempt to do that until later.
As soon as you exit 101 it's a similar experience in Oblivion as you exit the sewers - you are greeted with a wide open space to do whatever you want. There are not that many games out there that allow you freedom to kill quest npcs, etc and do whatever you want. As soon as I entered the town with the bomb and talked to the sheriff guy, I was like, ok, I like this dudes gun, let me wait until he is alone at the top area and I'll take it. That type of non-linear gameplay is what makes oblivion and fallout 3 exciting.
I am a huge fan of post-apocalypse type of themeed games, and fallout 3 does an excellent job of making you "survive" in this type of world with the decisions you make directly affecting your chances to survive.
I recommend you play it a little longer before you give up on it.

    FYI, spoiler alert*

I love this game, one of my all time favs. I done every mission and sidequest. While the ending was a bit weak, still a great game. To really have fun, don't be a saint lol, join the darkside.

Also, the game is a lot more enjoyable on "easy" simply because the damage is more realistic, nothing is worse than an enemy taking 2 to the head and still coming after you. Don't rush through the main story, it's actually short, explore and do sidequests. After you beat it, there are some awesome mods to play with also.
