After reading Chazman's write-up on the graphics cards, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

A friend of mine got a core duo Acer Aspire with an x1400 card.

realistically, will he be able to play games like Doom 3, COD2, Brothers in Arms, The Movies, etc....

I am thinking of getting the same unit he has, it has almost all the features I want and the only issue I have with it is the vid card.

    What do you guys think??

It should be ok at medium settings (low on some games), and I wouldn't say it's very future-proof.

I think you'll be able to play those games at high setting but I do agree with Cygnus that it will probably get outdated pretty quickly.
