I bought a laptop with the nVidia 8600m gs and saw one today with a nVidia 8600gm what is the difference? System memory for both is 2gb, both laptops are running core 2 duo 2.0GHz 4mb L2 cache

the 8600m gt has twice the number of vertex and pixel shaders i'm also assuming it's clocked higher than the 8600m gs but i'm not certain
-
not the gt but the gs and gm

I've never heard of a gm
-
i just did a bit of looking around and couldn't find anything, i believe it's a generic term for the gt and gs

Or it could be a typo

look under the grafix card and the page says GeForce⢠8600 GM
it could be a typo from circuit city -

Nope, if you go on hp's website, it's an 8600 GS

ya thats where i bought it from i think circuit city got it wrong. thanks for the help

I'm pretty sure when they put the 8600M G or 8600M, it's just to hide the fact that it's the GS, not the GT for consumers who don't know about graphics cards.
There are only two cards in the 8600M series from what I know. The 8600M GS and 8600M GT. The 8600M GT outperforms the GS by A LOT. -

The GS is clocked a lot higher, but because of the lack of stream processors and universal shaders, it is way slower.
what is the difference between the 8600m gs and 8600gm
