A single 5870 should be about equal depending on the game better or worse.

well i dunno, but the way i compare it is just look at the 3dmark06 score of that and compare it to the 3dmark06 scores of desktop cards and see which comes closest. That should give you a general idea.

Vantage GPU score is probably a better bet.

perhaps the OP was not asking about scores but the actual core?

Isn't the 480m based off the desktop 460, so, 460 sli?

Desktop 46 5, the 460 is superior in every way. The 470m is based off the 460, but the 480m and 470m are very downclocked compared to their desktop parts.

They'll be somewhere between the GTX 470 and the 5870.

May I suggest that the 460M SLI is the much better option?

If you need that much power, buy a desktop, it will be half the cost and quieter. I would wait for the 28nm architecture to come around and see how those are. SLI top end GPU for laptop doesn't make any sense at all. IMO a single HD5870M and GTX 460M are loud enough as it is. Not everyone is as annoyed by fan noise, but if you are like me, you would probably think SLI GTX 480 is unacceptable. I can't stand loud fan noise, the G73jh which is quietest of high performance notebooks, IMO is still louder than I'd like.

While gaming it runs around 92C and 47db. Anandtech found this machine to be louder than any desktop. For reference 47db is like having a refrigerator right next to you the entire time you are gaming.

IMO , its going to be a single 5870 or a very downclocked GTX460 SLI...

For some of us a desktop isn't a very good opition as we regulary travel. Plus with good headphones (I use Shure SRH440) you can't/shouldn't be able to hear your laptop.

It's actually a massively underclocked GTX 465. The GTX 460 can clock twice as high (850 vs 425 MHz).
