I'd say Left 4 dead is pretty high up there. Also, TF2 is still highly played.

probably the counter strike series in general....from 1.6 to Source there is an unmesurable competitive and friendly community.

this isn't really a good metric of "most played"...

the servers could all be empty.

    Consistently it's probably CS:S or 1.6.

But yes CoD4, TF2, and L4D are up there.

Valve games you always know you can find a solid full game no matter the title -- you can still find full Counter Strike servers and that's going on 10 years after release.

Hers one list with live feed:
    http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/

But for some reason the list hasn't been updated to include Half Life 2/Source games and Call of Duty 5: World at War.

    my list would go as:

    1)Counter strike 1.6
    2)counter strike source
    3)COD 4
    4)left 4 dead
    5)TF2

    something like that,

you are right is not as popular as i thought, about 1000 players.

    and UT3 is even lower.

neither would make the top 10 as most played. even day of defeat source has more players

EDIT: ok i was wrong, according to game spy , ut2004 is still very playable, but according to Steam, is about 1000 players

well I'm still playing Age of Empires 2, but back in the day there were over 5,000 people online every day .. and now they are like 200 :(

I'm guessing team player is the new addiction online these days.

do lots of people play Enemy Theritory:Qwake Wars ? .. I kinda like this game, but think it needs more maps.

you know, at some point, it just doesn't matter. if there are enough people playing at any given time, its not going to change the experience for you. there are always enough people playing tf2 and enough people playing counter strike to find a game. the spread between those two doesn't change the experience you get from it. and there are a ton of people playing ut2004 too. so whatever you enjoy, play.

    ill be on l4d ;)

LOL! I like the AoC line, the Dow Jones of the MMO world. :)

The most played online action game being played is likely some Korean/Chinese concoction we non-Asians have never heard of.

Yes, Battlefield 2 from the lists I've seen would fall under 5th most popular multiplayer game.

    1. Half Life 2/Sources games
    2. Half Life 1/CS1.6/TF/DoD
    2. Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warefare
    3. Call of Duty 5 - World at War
    5. Battlefield 2
    6. Battlefield 2142
    ....

I went back to CSS a couple of weeks ago and I have to say....It was still fun to play(even after playing COD4 multiplayer for a long time). My vote definitely goes to CSS.

Counter Strike Source by far. A lot more people are migrating to CSS from 1.6.

currently online | Total today | Game
    87,922 | 91,782 | Counter-Strike: Source
    68,714 | 69,737 | Counter-Strike
    29,430 | 31,320 | Football Manager 2009
    21,520 | 29,110 | Left 4 Dead
    12,521 | 16,019 | Team Fortress 2
    9,523 | 9,717 | Condition Zero
    6,096 | 6,966 | Day of Defeat: Source
    4,342 | 5,629 | Garry's Mod
    2,578 | 2,604 | Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

As of... right NOW. I think that pretty much sums it up. CS:S not only has more players than anything else, but more active players. (From the steam stats list)

consider that u HAVE to have steam to play those games, so yeah according to steam, the steam games will be more.

Xfire is a good way to judge the online games played, and CSS is #5 while CS1.6 is #11. Cod4 is #2. I would say right now, call of duty 4 is the most played game online.
