    I'm configuring a sony SR laptop. There are two processor choices, a T6600 (2.2ghz, 2mb cache, and 35w tdp 800mhz FSB) and a P8800 (2.6ghz, 3mb cache, 25w tdp 1066 FSB) The graphics card im paring this with is a ati 4570 (64-bit, 512 GDDR3)

Will this graphics card be hampered by the T6600? The price difference between the two processors is almost 200 bucks. I'm not doing any video encoding or anything very processor intensive on this laptop. I will be gaming, mostly playing left 4 dead 2 (the demo for now anyway).

Also, I know the P8800 will have less heat and more batt life, but is there a striking difference?

Performance wise, neither will be a hinder to the graphics since the HD4570 will most likely always be the bottleneck. While it is an ok card, it's still lower end s most games will be bottlenecked by it.

If you're not doing anything CPU intensive, save your money and get the T6600. The battery life is only seen if you stress both CPUs tot he max(i.e. for light use it's non apparent) and the heat output is negligible if you undervolt the T6600.

The 4570 card is not very good.. so even getting the P8800 is not going to help much in games.. try getting another notebook... VAIO's are overpriced and that's why i bought a Hp instead of VAIO.. got a much better GPU and processor with the same price.. so just stick with T6600 if your gonna buy this notebook.. if i were u , i'd try to get a different notebook..

i want the sony SR because of the extreme weight and size, vs the power in it. I bought a Asus with a 9600 GS, and I don't like the touchpad, screen, weight, and battery life on it. If there is a comparible laptop in this size/weight catergory though, id love to hear about it :).

Doing a check on notebookcheck.net, the 9600 gs vs the 4570 (with GDDR3) its a little slower, but not by too much.

As Forever_Melody noted, stick with the T6600.

A higher power processor will benefit you if consistently max out your CPU (90-100% usage) for extended periods. Encoding, rendering, etc.
For gaming the workload falls mostly on the GPU. The CPU processes frames and sends them to the GPU for rendering, and most of the time the CPU is producing more frames than the GPU can render so a faster CPU is pointless. For a technical explanation, this thread is a great read:

I say go with the P8800.

Low power GPU + Low power CPU = win = Battery Life

Hey, don't bash the 4570, it's an awesomely capable card considering its low/mid-range status. Anything that lets me max out TF2, Left 4 Dead (and 2 if the demo is anything to go by), CoD4 and run Fallout 3 on mostly high settings is A-okay in my book. ;)

That said, I don't think the P8800 upgrade is worth $200. Maybe $100 tops.
