Good question. Here is how far you can safely overclock:
    Core clock 400mhz
    Shader clock 800mhz
    Memory clock 500mhz.

Hello? Overclocking was never meant to be safe. There is no "safe range". You overclock as far as your specific card can handle it, and you do it at your own risk. It varies from card to card how much (if any) they can be overclocked, even between different cards of the exact same model.

You can push it a good 100mhz increase before seeing improvements. I OCd my card by 150 mhz and i saw about 4~5 fps increase and got like 700 3Dmarks06

550/1100/750 is stable for me (8400m GS DDR3). Cant guarantee you will achieve the same as each GPU have different potentials.

I managed to max out my core clock at 600mhz/1200mhz but the temps went to 81c while heavily gaming so i had to roll back. No artifacts.

I still havent pushed it to the limit. I wonder if i can max out the memory clock too... haha nahhtttt!

You wont get ultra results with an 8400M gs...you probably only get to the power of an 8400M GT maybe even less.

Yeah don't overclock. It's risking much for ultra-low gains. :)

Of course not. I dont plan or expect to get ultra results from overclocking. OC'ing just a small boost of performance to me. Im just a casual gamer (css & bf2)

Im only getting like 1800 points OC'd. Some people seem to get the same score without OC lol. Another user managed to get 2700ish which is the same as a 8400GT

Are all of the 8400M GS gpus' DDR3, or is it manufacturer specific? I'd imagine that a DDR2 one would not scale nearly as well........

Ive never seen mine go that high!! Usually never breaks 70C

What software are you using to moniter temps? And where do u leave your laptop when you play games??

HWmonitor is the program i use to check temps, and i play on a hard table surface. the laptop is a flat bottom machine, not the hp ones with the battary rasing the laptop. was playing titan quest and I alt+tab out of the game when the fan is running at 100%. highest stock temp was 87C, and highest overclock by 100mhz when up to 98C. the idle temp is around 55C

Well id definatly avoid overclocking for now.. Graphics cards are capable of operating up to 110C - 120C, but i think it would seriously degrade their lifespan running 90+ for a long period of time.

I suggest maybe monitor a few other games through a half hour period and see what temps you get (average + load) and maybe even try elevating it slightly to see if it makes a difference :)

A little of topic, but, what are the minnimum clock values possible for the 8400M GS ? for having the lowest possible temperature while not gaming ? (watching video for instance)

I'm hesitating between a 8400 M GS and an intel X3100 for a vostro 1500 (I never game but will use this pc for video, internet .. and want to lowest possible temperature to avoid as much as possible fan noise, cpu will be a penryn T8100)

If you *NEVER* game then the x3100 was made for YOU!

But to answer your question you could probably clock down to 100mhz for each core, shader, and memory ;) Mine underclocks itself to similar for video and browsing etc

The vostro 1500 doesn't have a huge resolution screen so a dedicated gpu wont show much improvement with video or high def dvd (my opinion :))

Yes, I never game and wanted an X3100. Howether, in France, the 1500 is not proposed anymore with this card (on internet), the minnimum is the 8400 M GS now. I'll call them tomorrow to see if it's still possible to have the X3100, but if not, starts to wonder about the nvidia ..
do you know the temperature of the nvidia when doing internet, watching video etc .... ?

if they give you the 8400, why not? just freaking take it, it is way better than the IGPU, and you never know when you might be in need of it...

I would prefer the X3100 as I want the pc to be as quiet as possible... more battery life is interresting also ..but if the 8400M GS can be comparable with the X3100 on these 2 criterias, I will buy the 8400 ..

Well my fans kick off after about 10 mins surfing.. or not at all when on my monster akasa notebook cooler w\2 1800rpm fans :p lol and from what i gather from the rest of this thread the vostro 1500 doesnt stay too cool :( So the x3100 will be cooler and definitly less power hungry.. and maybe lighter too!

Yes, that's why I hope I can buy one with the X3100 ..I was wondering about the 8400 if its parameters are set to minnimal values (I think these parameters are core clock, shader clock and memory clock)

Well as i said in earlier posts mine underclocks itself out of games (to 168 core\330 shader\100 memory) due to (i think) rivatuners power management :) And my fans still boot up after 10 mins surfing so underclocking wont do much :p But its your choice. Good luck! :)

Even if a dedicated GPU underclocks itself, it still eats up more battery on idle compared to a integrated card on full boost. This was discussed on a previous thread

If your not gonna game, a dedicated card is enough to do everything else. Aero runs the same as dedicated

Look 660hpv12, if your GPU temps breaks the 80 degrees celcius barrier its gone too far. You HAVE to push back to reduce damage. Get a laptop cooler , it helps.

Here is an example of decent temperature.

    my clocks are

    600/731 --> 75 Celcius MAX while gaming 1 hr+

    internet browsing---> 51 Celcius

Your temps are atleast 10 degrees higher than mine which is too much. Push back a bit, do some cleaning before overclocking again

here is what I overclock to when I play COD4 to get 60FPS on 1280x800 resolution

    nvidia gefore 8400m gs DDR3
stock core clock 400mhz to 600mhz
stock shader clock 800mhz to 800mhz
    stock memory clock 500mhz t0 750mhz

results will vary, my laptop specs are in my sig

I realized that when the temps hit 98C. so i dropped back to stock clock 400/800/500. and even on stock clocks, its hitting nearly 90C! And am not willing to underclock my card, that would entirely ruin my gaming experience. I think ill keep it on stock clock and call dell.

I think because your laptop is a budget model it will not hav the same amount\quality of fans for cooling, so it will probably produce more heat and have less of a lifespan :(

I was slightly shocked when i found out my sony had 4 internal fans :p
    cost 1500 euro tho:S

too bad you choose x3100, if you choose 8400gs and 9 cell battery you`ll get 5 hours non-stop on a charge like mine(just browsing), but maybe with x3100 it`ll 5h30min on a charge....
