I think you should put more info next to the links, e.g. whether it's an MXM card or a graphics card that fits in a specific laptop.

that's not easy to do because the market is always changing and in this particular case the market is very vulnerable.
And it's hard to say if it fits in a specific laptop, as you known there are many compatibility issues. But I'll try to organize things better.

Hey, good job on the list, this should be very helpful.

Fortunately for me I've got Alienware laptops so all I have to do is go to them. I've got my 3870's for my M9750 and as soon as the 4870's with DDR5 comes out I'll have them for my M17. :D

check some of those links, some are for asus. actualy it's easy to find some 8600M GT DDR2 and DDR3 version for the asus c90. Though other cards are difficult...
it really depends in what you want. but upgrading a notebook, CPU+RAM+HDD+GRAPHICS is a LOT more cheap then just buy a new one every X years. Of course manufacturers wants you to buy new notebooks they make much more profit that's why MXM was not fully implemented.
Some of the cards are exepensive, eurocom have the largest available list but they are always overpriced like in their notebooks, but they do price match. don't known if they do it for components.
high-end cards are always expensive, this is valid for desktops too. MXM cards should be a bit more expensive due to their special thermal and energy specifications but (sometimes) they don't require an heatsink and that saves some manufacturing costs so they shouldn't be so expensive.
And don't compare a $500 cheap notebook with an intel integrated card with a high-end notebook like the clevo d901c... of course just the clevo graphic cards can be more expensive then a new notebook. and high end desktop graphic cards can cost up to $700

The Dell XPS M1730 don't even use MXM! it's a weird Dual card in 1 board setup! Wonder if there would be any 4870's or GTX280's in that config? Anyone know what kinda tech it's called?

well... it depends in what you consider mxm. the pinout layout is the same but they make it proprietary. I didn't known about that dual config but it's the same as dual gpu desktop graphic cards. it's just a new thing in notebooks. not sure if it has some benefits.

RJTech also sells the GTX 260M for $480. I've confirmed this through email.
Same here. I'd love to get my hands on a 4870, but they're nowhere to be found.

EDIT: the 4870s were just confirmed to be coming for the new M17x, so Dell will be selling them. Might be MXM 3.0 though...

    hmm

Here are ~60 in stock better priced 3700m HP nVidia QuadroFX 3700M 1GB Video Card NB9E-GLM3 - eBay (item 390257490545 end time Nov-28-10 09:04:56 PST)
The 3700m is the 2nd to 3rd most powerful nvidia MXM 2.1 III card ever made. It has the same 128 shader count of the gtx 280m, some of these HP cards will simply work as gtx 280m and overclock if you flash the VBIOS.

Here are some decent priced fx 770m 512mb ddr3 which can probably be flashed to 9600m GT
    "HP 502338-001 8530P 8530W VIDEO CARD 512MB " - eBay (item 170552670873 end time Nov-13-10 07:57:35 PST)

2700m also work. 1600m DO NOT. 3600m do not work with built in displays unless you VBIOS flash to 9800m.
