pls help 2 decide which combo is better:

    c2d 8400 2.26ghz with nvidia 9800m gs(ASUS)

    or t94002.53 ghz with nvidia 9600m gt(HP)

main aim is to make the laptop decently future outdate proof

sorry if posting this ques here is wrong but dunno where else 2 put it!!

    The Asus.

The 9800m is a great video card, and the P8400 CPU is no slouch, either. And, since it looks like you're buying a G50vt model, it's extremely easy to switch out the CPU, if you wait for your warranty to end or are comfortable with voiding it.

So, hell, you can have your combo be a P9700 with a 9800m GS.

Since this is posted in the gaming section, I think you mean you want to future-proof it gaming-wise. Most games are limited by GPU power, not CPU power, so the better the GPU, the better.

Depends on what you do. Heavy work--3D rendering, video encoding, math programs--need quite a bit of juice, and since quad cores are becoming more and more mainstream most programs are optimizing for the additional threads a quad can manage.

    Some non-game programs have a 2.0 GHz quad whomping a 2.8 GHz dual-core.

If you're using it for everday use--maybe some office programs, occasional gaming, and internet, the Asus as-is can last for quite a while. With an upgrade to a high-end C2D, you can extend that, especially if you learn the art of overclocking and undervolting. Just note that the G50vt (That is what you're getting, right?) does not support quad core.

Ooh. If you're looking for battery life the G50vt series is not what you should be looking at. I suppose if you go to battery saver--modifying the settings so you meet your required needs--you can get... maybe two hours?

As for gaming... You can either run full-on and get no more than forty-five minutes--most likely thirty--or go into battery saver and have performance suffer greatly.

    I'm not familiar with "nfs".
