Day of Defeat 1.6 is still probably my favorite online FPS. DoD source is pretty nice, but i know more ppl that play 1.6 so i tend to play that more.

Battlefiled 2 is alright. Just be sure you have 1gb+ of RAM, that game hogs it. Battlefield 2142 is coming out in the fall. Its not super sci-fi. More of a real life interpretation of what technology will be like then on todays current track, so no warp ships and laser guns, but hovering "carrier" like platforms, looks cool. I would not recommend CSS (Counter-Strike: Source) I really hate that game. After playing BF2 for so long I cant stand a game like that.

Some big name titles that will be released in a couple of months is Battlefield 2142, and Quake Wars: Enemy Territory. However, if your looking for something to play now I was always a fan of Battlefield 1942 (even though its a few years old its still fun to play in multiplayer).

LOL...if you are looking for realistic go no farther than Red Orchastra. The game is the most realistic game that I have ever played. For one thing they removed the crosshairs that you normally get when you shoot from the hip. Instead you have to use the iron sights to aim. The game also has very realistic tank battles and they let you switch between AP and HE shells. (AP stands for Armor Piercing and HE stands for High Explosive) You really need to work as a team in this game and you are able to use VOIP. I highly recomend this game. :)

multiplayer games without crosshairs are doomed to failure. most people will still try to shoot from the hip and when they miss badly, they will hate the game and give up.

Counter strike is still the best FPS to date. ever. no other fps has matched it in terms of longevity and popularity.

I tend to disagree...First off you can still hit from the hip. You just need to pay more attention to where your muzzle is pointing.

Secondly most of the time you are shooting from farther ranges (this is not a run and gun game like BF2 and CoD). You actually need to use some strategy to stay alive (Pretty much one shot one kill with bolt action rifles). :p

Finally this game has many mature players. You don't need to worry about people killing you just to take your weapon or getting into the tank. In fact most people help you out and cover you when you try to clear a trench. Sure accidents do happen but everyone is very forgiving (unlike BF2 LOL).

These games definately won't go away...instead they will draw out the more mature players who play for the team and not their score. :p

BTW...I have nothing agianst run and gun games. They are fun too. I am just happy that we get a game that strives for realism.

Hey Tim just to let you know I always forgive TK's in BF2. If it was an accadent, then it wasnt in malice, so I forgive. But if some 10 year old punk tk's me for a tank, his ass is dead and punished.

Good to see I'm not the only one that dislikes Counter Strike. I hate it with a passion, I never liked it. I find it boring, and well.....very basic.

    Best Multiplayer FPS games:

Battlefield 2 (or any of the battlefield games, BF2 has the best feel and best overall experience though)
    Day of Defeat
Soldier of Fortune 2 (this is still one of my favourites after 4 years)
    Call of Duty
Red Orchestra (if you like realistic games you'll love this)

And finally, the original Unreal Tournament.....it's about 7 years old at this stage but still as fun as ever. I think its by far the best games out of the whole franchise, UT, U2, UT2k3, UT2k4, etc. And it runs on 200mhz, 128mb ram and no graphics card if you really have a crap laptop :D :D

this is not necessarily true. many games implement is so that if you do not raise you iron sights, your accuracy is wild and it does not shoot straight to where crosshairs would be. specifically designed to make shooting from the hip inaccurate and useless.

I remember games like this. in fact, I remember clan matches in the original ghost recon. 1 life with 1 shot-kills. you hid under a tree and didnt move because if the enemy saw you first by chance, you die. 2 hours sitting there waiting for a single shot, then everyone opens up and its over in 30 seconds. realistic, but not fun considering the 2 hours your spent waiting. I must admit though, it was exciting doing real squad maneuvers in matches, voice chatting like its real, and the perfection you must strive for when playing due to the fact that one wrong move and you let a lot of people down. There is a market for this type of game, but it is quite small.

this is a generalization, and is true of every single game. everyone would like to think that their favorite game has all mature players. the truth is, most gamers are kids or act like kids. expecting professionalism and maturity in a game is unrealistic... after all, it IS a game. every game has its annoying n00bs and its professionals.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure this game may rock. But it will never have the popularity of games like counter-strike where it has something for everyone: run and gun (and usually a quick death) for some, the rare event of teamwork in a pub server for the casual but "mature" gamer, and hardcore clan strategy for those who like strategy, teamwork, and hardcore gaming.

If you hate CS, different strokes for different folks. But you can't deny its staying power over every other FPS, seeing as it just celebrated its 7th birthday. I'd love to discuss the intricacies of strategy and gameplay involved in CS, but let's not make a flame war.

    Hi there.

Yeah, I don't like CS too... there's just something about this game that doesn't get to me...

Anyway, my favourite mp game is: ALLMIGHTY Quake 3 Arena (especially CPMA mode), I spent hours and hours playing it. I'm not a pro or something but it's just so good.

I was also playing a lot of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and enjoyed it a lot. Didn't have chance to check more realistic fps mp games that actually require a bit of strategy to play but I'm sure I would enjoy playing them (but that requires good team members).

If you want a free, realistic, and good online FPS, then try America's Army. The game is made by a division of the US army, so its made by real soldiers. To say the least, its realistic, also some maps are unique, and very fun. Squad gameplay is at another level in this game.

There are cross hairs, but there are other very cool features. Like you are required to go through "boot camp" when you first start. Then If you want the medic role to bo open to you in the game, you have to take medic training. It consists of about an hour of "class room" time, where you have to listen to what said, learn, and then take a test and see if you pass. In game the medic dosent revive and totally heal people like they do in BF2. If your shot, you call for a medic. When they come they patch you up so you stop bleeding. If you dont get attention, you eventually die. No respawn, matches are around 10 minutes in length, max. Fun game if you want something fun, free, and not too demanding, but still great.

Also, don't forget WarRock. It's free, runs pretty well on lower spec laptops and is pretty much a direct clone of Battlefield 2. The graphics are really nice - they would be nice for a retail game let alone a free one - and the physics and sound are actually better then BF2 in my opinion. Worth a look if you can't run BF2 on your laptop very well...

One free game that I'm not seeing is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. There's a very addictive and fun game that's absolutely amazing for the value, which, again, is free. Just Google it and you'll find it.

Ok I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 with a Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS graphics card. My settings for DOOM 3 are at the lowest possible as far as graphics and definition. And still, I get extreme lags when more than 1 enemy is shooting at me. Is this a graphics card problem? Or is this a hard drive problem? I have cleaned my disk space and defragged and it still does it.
