ATI 4870, 4870X2 (fastest GPU currently released) or 3870X2 is better than both of those.

Upgrading your 8800 GTS to anything less than a GTX 260/280 or an ATI 4870 doesn't make too much sense. Every other card on the market can be reached in performance by simply overclocking your 8800 GTS. Take the 9800GTX off your list, it's a piece of junk.

Take a look at newegg.com for better choices beyond Best Buy... Also, as others have mentioned, go with a 4870 or GTX 260 card (there will be a new version of the latter later this week with more shaders, so I'd wait for that).

And a disclaimer for all the newer members. This discussion is about desktop graphics not notebook. Nothing has changed 99.9% of you still cannot upgrade your GPU's. Sorry. ;)

The 9800GTX is not junk. i have a evga 9800GTX oc/ed to 800/2000/1200 stable which is better then the 8800GTS 320/640mb and better then the 9800GTX+ when the 9800GTX is oc/ed.
