Ok yes i know that the 8600gt > 8600m gt, but i also know that lower resolutions puts a lot less stress on the graphic card, so..... what would have the better performance,
a desktop 8600gt on a 1680x1050 monitor
or
a notebook 8600m gt on a 1280x800 screen? on a 1440x900 screen?
lets just say both have ddr2 video memory, same system specs, but the laptop is a 256mb and the desktop is ~ 512mb.

its really not obvious, a 1280x800 screen has 58% of the pixels a 1680x1050 screen has. That leads me to believe the mobile version of the card needs to process a hell of a lot of less information than the desktop version on a 1680x1050 screen, but its ok you can be a dick if you really want too.
I'd really like it if someone would actually explain why instead of just saying option A or option B. -
512mb on the desktop gfx will run that 1680x1050 rez real nice.
1440x900 is a struggle for the 8600mgt while 1280x800 rez is flawless on the card. -
the 8600GT mobile and desktop cards are no different except for clocks speeds on the memory and core. O/C the mobile card and you can get desktop preformace plain and simple. I can run mine 630/900 which will be faster then a regular 8600GT.

The desktop will definitely outperform its mobile counterpart.

You also need to consider the max res. Before I got my 8800, I ran my 8700 in my x200 against my 7800 gtx in my pc. 1680 x 1050 on pc, 1440 x 900 on the laptop. Surprisingly, the laptop out FPS'ed the pc even though the specs of the 7800 gtx are higher. Now that I have the 8800, I don't get to do that test anymore, but I would say that the laptop in lordofericstan's situation would out fps the desktop. The shortage of pipelines in the 8600 kill it for high resolutions.

^^^ thats what i was wondering.
which is better, 8600m gt or 8600gt (desktop) under this circumstance?
