Card overclocked? Fans working? Not using the laptop on a surface which traps heat?

Next question: What drivers are you using? Some of the 17 series drivers from LV2Go raise temperatures significantly even when doing mundane tasks.

Check powermizer and see if it is disabled.

156.10. stock drivers from sager. that was my next question pai. how do i enable powermizer? the registry or what?

note that i checking out some guides here. is it possible my temp readings are wrong and i need to offset the temp so rivatuner will give me a more accurate reading?

I am at 67C right now. Usually between 65-68 when online while using 169.62 (modded inf) on my G2S. My stock drivers were in the 70s, so I would not worry too much; are you like 72 or 78? Try using Nvidia Monitor and see what you get.

PS: Try this as well: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

already using hwmonitor. average temp is about 72 +- a degree or 2. i am not overly concerned but i haven't even popped a game in my new laptop yet. i know it's not dirty. i wanted to get a couple of games, supreme commander being one of them. i'm guessing the absolute threshold of the gpu is about 100 degrees. that would mean i have about 18 degrees tolerance if i play it safe and don't let it go over 90 degrees. help please.

If you look closer its also a 8800M :) Different card, tho it seems quite cool if its in a 15,4" screen, mine dosent raise above 60°C even playing crysis. But back on topic, got a friend with a Zepto 6625W (8600M GT), which sits around 55°C when doing nothing, raising to around 70°C when gaming.

If it reaches 70°C doing nothing, i might suspect something wrong with the cooling, but then again, GFX's tends to be able to run around the 90°C with no biggie. My old FS Xi1546 ran quite hot, around 70° on the cpu while gaming and no idea about the gfx, suspects around 90. But try firing up a game, keeping an eye on the temps :) Might even try out a few different drivers, as some of them tends get the cards running hot. Many recommends the 171.xx or 174.xx, could try one of thoes and see if the temps will lower :)

If you installed laptopvideo2go drivers with their inf, or running with stock mobile driver, you should have the powermizer option available in the Nvidia control Panel. There are exceptions, all 17x.xx drivers I have tried so far doesn't have the option regardless if you use laptopvideo2go's inf or not.

I got the 167.62 with modded inf drivers and no powermizer for me in Nvid control panel (advanced view).

Hmmm, well that really made me feel special, because every driver I installed up to 17x.xx series have mobile options, such as powermizer and screen dimmer. :D

EDIT: OH WAIT, I am so stupid, that's because it was back when I was on XP. Vista's got powermizer control integrated into the power plans!

To OP: which OS are you running?

yesterday i was inquiring why the hell my gpu was idling 74 plus or minus a degree or two. weeeell, i finally popped in a game, command and conquer generals, to see how well the 8600 performed and how many degrees my gpu would go up. everything is maxed out of course, no surprise there. i figured this game would easily play and temp would go UP a few degrees. i checked my temps every couple of minutes and it never went higher than 67 degrees. somebody explain please. this is first laptop with dedicated graphics i have had and i don't understand. if my fan came on, it was on low and i never heard it. and i'm running rivatuner with OSD for temps and fps.

In games, the fan operates at a higher RPM to take care of the heat. It could be that at idle, the fan doesn't go that fast and therefore the GPU gets a bit hotter. What you're seeing is normal as far as I know - I have seen similar situations before.

Low 80*Cs is an A-OK temperature, no problems there. You have a different notebook than pukemon - yours is much thinner so it is understandable that the GPU gets a bit warmer. Like I said though, nothing to get concerned about.

My Asus G2S IDLES at 88 degrees. Maxes out at 107. No overclocking. Is this OK?

Run Windows Update and see if 167.59 shows up for you. Your computer is very similar to mine so I'm guessing it should.

In answer to the topic question, the Compal FL92 computers (which your Sager is a variation of) have a strange fan scheme. The fan will not activate unless the temperature is in the mid-high 70's and deactivates once you hit 70 degrees or so. If you're gaming, it goes to full power when you reach mid-high 80's and then powers down once you're 10 degrees below that.

Basically, it does not overheat, but nor does it stay cool.

my gpu idles at the mid 60's with poor ventilation (resting on the soft care instead of raised up or on a flat table)... same gpu... so there is either a case design difference or you could try a different driver.
