I originally planned on getting the t61p but I hear theres a new T series coming out this summer so I can wait for that. I've also heard that theres this new thing called Nehalem and its supposed to be huge? How huge?
I mainly do alot of documentation and play games..games like chrysis, COD4 and I can't wait for the upcoming blizzard games![]()
Will I see any difference with Nehalem, if i wait for it?

HelloMotto,
I have moved your thread to the Gaming section. You should receive more feedback there. -
HelloMotto, Nehalem for notebooks? probably wait Q4 2009
-
From what I've found on Wikipedia about it I'd expect it to be pretty huge... but are you willing to forgo a notebook for 2 years while you wait? Montevina hasn't even been released yet...

According to an unauthorized preview by AnandTech.com, Nehalem will be a significant improvement (between 5-50% better at the same GHz) over current Intel processors in every situation. Power consumption should also theoretically go a little bit lower.
But mobile (laptop) Nehalem chips wont be available until early next year at the earliest, probably Q2 2009. So I'm not really sure it is worth the wait. Current mid-range and high-end Intel processors (even AMD processors, for that matter) are fast enough for any application (even games). The only place that will greatly improve is time oriented processing like transcoding video and developing other media. But considering that modern GPUs are quickly growing in capability, including the ability to transcode video and deal with in-game physics, this further decreases the importance of an extremely high-end processor.
Nehalem's primary addition to mobile systems will be reasonable quad core. Multitasking and multithreading is where its at and where it will be.
All of this said, I still don't know whether to recommend waiting or not! I've given you some preliminary data, you'll have to weigh the pros and cons. Are you in need of a new system now? Is your old one killing you? Can you afford to wait? Is this a necessity or a want? -
sorry whats Q2 2009?
Those were some really useful information. I'm going to college in fall of 2009 so I can wait if I wanted to...I gotta decide between getting the new lenovo T-series or wait for what will be avaliable for next year. lol
thanks -
I thought the difference clock for clock was only 5-10% or something. However, when multi-threading was involved it was a big difference, about 40% I think.
EDIT:2nd quarter of 2009. So probably a bit before you go to college. If you can afford to wait this might be something worth waiting for if you'll use the increased multi-threading abilities in your day. If not, you may as well get one now since it won't make a difference for you. -
Business Quarter 2 2009. I'm not a business student so I could be wrong but my logical assumption is somewhere between April and July of '09.
Since you're going to college in the fall of '09 you could wait... I waited for my Gateway FX until summer of 08 since I'm going to college this fall. Or if you need a laptop now you could get a $400 cheapie and save for Nehalem. You might need all the graduation gifts you can get though... prices will be at a premium right after release

whats multi threading? would playing games I've mentioned considered multi threading?

You shouldn't really buy a notebook until just before you head off to college.
You could put together a gaming desktop for $700 that could tide you over until then, which would easily exceed what you would be buying for 3 times the price...

Or, you could simply upgrade your GPU (if your using a desktop right now...) and enjoy the games equally as much. I was about to buy a laptop for upwards of $2000 in January for college this September, I instead bought a high end dx.9 GPU for $130 bucks and I max out every game out there (including Crysis- 85% Maxed @1280*1024
). That would have been a stupid financial mistake looking back on it.
Don't know much about this Nehalem, but as long as I have a chance at upgrading whatever laptop I have, then I'll be good. -
Well i need a laptop because of its portability. :-/ thanks for the suggestion though.

Oh OK. Get your hardware then
will gamers/regular users see significant difference with Nehalem?
