Not that I've run into... I highly doubt your friend's problem is with 8. Anything that runs on 7 has run just as well on 8.

I been using Windows 8 since launch on my trusty old P170HM and cant say that i had problems with gaming.
Even the horrid Games for Windows Live client boots up fine.

No issues whatsoever here, been using 8 since it launched. Exactly the same as 7.

Your friend is probably having another issue, i wouldn't say they are independent, but very little correlated. I would driver sweeper clean the drivers and reinstall them. Probably a driver / profile issue.

He actually returned the msi gt70 laptop and got a Win7 clevo instead.
But i feel better knowing it wasn't a win8 issue.

The problem there is that unless you log into Win 8 with a Windows Live ID, your GFWL games won't run! Try switching to a local account and start up a GFWL game. I bet it won't run.

If I remember correctly, Windows 8 actually, albeit very slightly, boots gaming performance due to the reduced background footprint (although there's likely a few games that don't 'like' it, just as there's some games that don't 'like' Windows 7).

Windows 8 is fine for gaming. Here's a good review from Toms Hardware where they benchmark the same systems with Windows 7 while playing games against Windows 8 while playing games. Go through the benchmark and check out the FPS differences.. for the most part it's identical, but Windows 8 does appear to give an extra 1 or 2 FPS per game here and there (but realistically, the FPS gains would of most likely been related to the video card's driver).

I've had quite a few issues getting games to run on Windows 8. Been noticed especially since I'm doing the review of the Clevo P157SM and loading a ton of games on it. I've tried every trick with Just Cause 2 and it's just not working. Windows 7 I just install and play. I've had to fuss with things on Windows 8 for many games to get them to run. Eventually do get them to run but requires lots of googling and finagling. This is on a fresh install of Windows 8.

That's strange WingNut, Right now I'm on a Dell Laptop running Windows 8 Pro 64bit and I too have Just Cause 2. Matter of fact I have it installed on this laptop right now, runs without any problem.

As for other games I've tried on Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit, here's a list that I've personally installed and played on Windows 8 without issue:

    APB: Reloaded
    Just Cause 2
    World of Warcraft
    Aion
    Rift
    Tomb Raider
    Battlefield 3
    Dead Space 3
    Metro 2033
    Metro Last Light
    FarCry 2
    FarCry 3
    Crysis 3
    Bioshock Infinite
    Grand Theft Auto IV
    Tera Online
    Counter Strike GO
Quake 2 (incl. Instagib and Rocket Arena mods)
    Saints Row: The Third
    Need for Speed Most Wanted
    GRID
    GRID 2
    Skyrim

That's all I can think of for the moment that I recall playing on Windows 8.

HTWingNut: With Just Cause 2, some people put dxadapter=0 in their launch options and it started fine, but I never had to do this with mine.

Did that too, still no go.

The two I mentioned already Just Cause 2, Dirt 3, and also Batman Arkham City so far. Seems GFWL is the culprit in a lot of games, which is ironic considering it's an MS service. There were a couple others I don't remember what I did but did get them working eventually. It seems GFWL and .NET distributables are the primary reasons. It's just that there's so many compatibility issues, and versions of .NET that one wrong install and it all goes to hell.

I've been using Windows 8 on my desktop for the last few months. Only issues I've had with games is trying to run Borderlands 2. For some reason it just wouldn't open from Steam, (I just use the actual .exe file now). The only majoir problem I had with Windows 8 was when I first installed it. I had to update the firmware on my SSD otherwise my computer would BSOD every 30 minutes.

Yep, must all be related the same problem on your machine as I too play those games and tons more on 8 without issues... I do recall having to seperately download and install a GFWL client but once that was done all of them have worked great. I am struggling to think of any game in my library that worked on 7 but didn't work the same on 8.

Now the Metro interface, thats a whole 'nother pile of beans ha

The only issue i noticed when gaming with windows 8 is with the use of Fraps, some games fraps does not show the fps number when gaming like Crysis.

good to know guys. i forwarded this link to my friend.
as he is more of a pure pc gamer and not technically inclined (such a rare thing lol), he said that looking back it could actually have been a faulty machine. he would constantly get bsod's in coh and coh2

Does your friend use an SSD for a boot drive by any chance? Windows 8 seems to be finicky with SSD's so maybe try updating the firmware. I know that fixed my BSOD issues with Windows 8.

Hmmm strange, I've had Windows 8 since release, and I've only had one single issue, which hadn't anything to do with games.

I'm running Just Cause 2, Dirt 3, and all the other games that I own perfectly on Windows 8, no issues at all.
