I just got The Witcher and have been playing it on the laptop in my sig. I've been running it all on high settings with anti-aliasing at 2x and a resolution of 1280x1024. It runs very smooth but tends to crash sometimes at the cutscenes and I lose my progress. I have the latest patch installed that the game recommended. Is there something I need to change in the settings? I'm getting sick of playing the first 15-20 minutes of this game over. I looked through previous threads already and couldn't find an answer.

Any error message? BSOD ?

turn off AA, turn on Vsync.

Turn off depth of field as that is unstable especially during cutscenes. If you run Vista use BCDEdit/ IncreaseUserVA 2800 command in elevated command prompt, this has virtually removed crashing in game for me.

I'm going to assume you're running Windows Vista since it crashed a lot for me. The problem dissappeared completely after installing the KB940105 patch. Some people also have to increase the virtual memory allocation for the user using the command
BCDEDIT /set IncreaseUserVa 2800 -
I'll try the patch and see what happens... don't think I should have to completely turn off AA with this graphics card but I will try it if the patch doesn't work.

I'm in the same boat at the moment with this game. Running on Vista I've got the latest game patch installed along with all required MS Hotfixes, tried the BCDEdit command etc and nothing helps. Keeps crashing when I try to save the game. So frustrating as what I have experienced so far is really good but at the moment I might as well use the DVD as a coaster
Currently using the 169.25 drivers but have tried all of the others available with no difference. -
169.28 drivers work fine for me, unfortunately for you the BCDEdit really works better if you have more than 2GB of RAM on your system.
Other tips I can give are to keep the number of savegames as low as possible, install the game on a separate partition away from your Windows OS partition, run the game on Administrator mode and with Windows SP2 compatibility (ironic but it does work for some) and keep depth of field off since that really screws with stability for some systems. -
Thanks for the tips Harleyquin! I'm already running the game as Administrator with Windows SP2 compatibility to no avail, though I admit to not trying turning the depth of field off so will give that a bash tonight
witcher crashes
