I am interested in purchasing a quad core notebook, but it seems that all the ones I am interested in come with the nvidia GPU and optimus.
I have no need for the nvidia GPU or optimus (the machine is for work/software development, nothing that can use a GPU) so I would like to avoid dealing with the optimus drivers, nvidia GPU, extra power drain, etc. etc. by just not using the GPU.
So my question is: if I install ONLY the standard Intel 4000 IGP drivers, and do NOT install the nvidia drivers (and disable the nvidia device in device manager), will the laptop work just like it only had IGP? Will the Nvidia GPU be powered off and not generating heat or consuming power? Will everything else work just fine as if it were a standard IGP machine?
thanks!

Optimus will only activate the NVIDIA GPU if you play any games or other 3D software. So you're fine.

Also, you can go into the Nvidia settings and set all applications to use the HD4000 globally if you like. With that being said, my experience with Optimus has been pleasant so far - Nvidia settings allow you to check for and install updates

optimus is a non-issue. but the answer to each of your three questions is--yes.
working around optimus - using IGP only?
