I am not sure which one to choose; it is for a 17 inch Widescreen. I understand that WUXGA is generally the better choice (especially on a 17inch Wide) but my main concern is game fps. The reason I ask is because the native res for WU is 1920x1200, while the WXGA is 1440x900. I assumed the lower native res would result in better fps, but I'm not sure since I hear the quality is very poor compared to WUXGA.

    Thankss

I have 1440x900 on my 17". Now, after using it if I had the choice, I'd defenitely go with the WUXGA screen. Game fps depends on what GPU you are getting, and what games. An 8800 GTX Mobile card should be fine :p

What do you mean the quality is poor? The advice on this forum is to go for the lowest possible native resolution so that your games look sharper and can raise other settings higher though at the cost of less screen real estate. If you're not using the machine exclusively for gaming then a higher native resolution is nice for doing things like video encoding and watching Hi-definition movies. It's your call.

Another thing to take note of is the graphics card on that 17". If you have a weak card then taking the lower resolution is going to be a cheaper and more sensible option since the card won't have to work so hard.

Oh I plan to have the 8800m GTX like Amol said, and Harley I have read many posts here and there of people being unhappy with WXGA and its quality of picture. That the WUXGA looks much better and gives more freedom, people have said they feel trapped with the smaller res of WXGA (however many of them were 15 inch screens). I am still very uncertain about what to do, if everyone thinks WXGA will look ok and give better fps I have no problem choosing that.

You've got the most powerful graphics card combination for a 17" so treat yourself with the higher resolution since the card can handle just about every application thrown at it in native resolution. 1440 native resolution is considered a sweet spot for a 15" laptop, not a 17" one.

If you go for WUXGA you can view images ran at 1080p (1920x1080) , HD.
Also,a higher resolution means less chance to be disturbed by haywire pixels :)

    WUXGA = Better quality

It won't make any difference to ingame FPS, unless you want to run constantly at native resolution.

With the 8800 card, to get anything less than WUXGA would be a crime, as you would be limiting the awesome potential of the card.

I have the WUXGA screen, and I am very happy with it. :D

im not sure what you meant by " it wont make any difference to ingame FPS" because running a game at 1920x1200 is alot harder for the GPU than running it say 1280x800. should be no problem for a 8800m GTX though.

1400*900 is WXGA+ or WSXGA, not WXGA. WXGA is 1280*720 and 1280*800.

If (and only if) you have an 8800M GTX then yes, WUXGA will be great for gaming but might be a bit of an eye strain during other windows based tasks. I have WSXGA (1440*900) on my desktop 19" widescreen and I find the quality perfectly good, but then I generally have lots of AA and AF turned on.

I would just go with the WUXGA then. I could always lower the resolution I'm sure if it's not working out for a certain game (being in 1920x1200). The only strange thing to me is that I am using a 19inch widescreen LG for my desktop right now, and it runs in 1440x900 which seems fine. But I don't know how that would compare to a 17inch widescreen laptop, perhaps 1920x1200 is too big of a res though. Ultimately I will just pick the WUXGA but I hope it's not a mistake.

    Thanks everyone

WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is perfect choice in the middle too.

Actually, I am quite happy with 1440x900 on a 17" screen.

It really depends on the quality of screen.

The 8800m should be able to handle higher resolutions, but you WILL still see a reduction in frame rate by using them.

That being said, If you have the budget to get the 8800m, then odds are you have the budget to get the 1920x1200 screen.

    I too am quite happy with a 1440x900 17".
And mostly games run fine outside the native resolution (although the gui of source games get very blurred, at least my go7600 can handle those at native resolution)

Then maybe I should get 1440x900!! So confusing, I don't know what to do. I basically just want to max my possible frame rate while keeping med/high settings.

Yeah what cthulhu is saying. Getting a higher resolution screen doesn't mean you have to play the games at that resolution. And the fuzziness factor when scaling the res down depends on the screen. I don't notice anything on my c90s screen.

IN terms of performance, an overclocked 8600 can play modern games at 1680 x 1050 quite well in my opinion. Besides yes of course there is a hit on performance with increasing the res but at higher resolutions AA is not needed as much or at all so it balances out somewhat.

Vista has such a thing as increasing DPI while keeping the resolution at 1920x1200. Also , with Ctrl+mouse wheel up/down you can increase icon size in windows.
That is what I use and it`s sharp as a pencil :)

    Go with the higher res.

Scaling down isn't bad.. And the picture quality with high res is fantastic.

It depends on games, really. Setting the desktop to a lower res for exemple is pretty much :swoon:

But you can also activate the scaling on the nv control panel
