I know the x700 is better than the x1400 but i was just wondering if it still is despite the x1400 having 512mb ram and the x700 only 128mb ram? Probably a stupid question but I just want to check before I choose out of the two laptops.

And am I right in thinking they are both better than the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 TurboCache supporting 256MB? Will I be able to play Medieval Total War 2 with them? If I can play that, on low settings if need be, then Im happy! I have Rome working fine on my old Ati Radeon 9200se so im figuring any of these would be an improvement on that...

Anyone of these cards is an upgrade from your current card and will run your game at low/medium settings. The x700 is much stronger than the x1400.
Nvidia 7400 is an equivalent card to x1400. Turbo cashe on nVidia, hyper memory on ATI.
Out of the three, I would choose x700 (the strongest one).

    This would also help you.

    X1400 256mb > X700 128 > GF 7400 128MB > 9200

I really don't care If the X700 is slightly better than the X1400, It still doesn't support duel core, SM3, and 128MB doesn't get you very far in new games.

I've had serious issues with the 7400 and trying to play games. It even lagged on roller coaster tycoon 3 on the lowest settings, and I was using a 256MB version with 512MB using Turbocach.

An x700 has much more power than an x1400. Much more than "slightly better". I know they score similar in 3DMark, but benchmarks mean nothing. Gameplay is what matters. Even without SM3 my x700 is still pushing much higher graphics settings and FPS than any x1400 in all the newer games.

It doesn't really matter that the X1400 supports SM 3.0; it can't handle any games using that anyway. Or, with pathetic settings.

Also, the video card doesn't have anything to do with dual-core support.

The X1400 is not powerful enough to use more than 128MB worth of memory, but the X700 is. The X700 as stated is a lot more powerful.

Um the x1400 only has 128mb, and yes 128mb still plays everygame out there (gpu dependant that is). If it is between the 3 cards, 7400, x1400 and x700, go for the laptop that has the best features (e.g. cpu, ram, hdd, etc). The x1400 is newer then the x700 but the x700 is still more powerfull, and the 384mb extra is shared ram.

There is no 256mb version, it's either 128mb or 64mb (like on the XPS m1210). I used to have an SZ with the 7400 that ran BF2 easily on medium settings. You can get 2000 marks on 3dmark05 on the 64mb xps.

I stand my ground on the x700 point. It is the strongest card between the three.

Even on 3DMarks its usually better too. x700 gets around 2500-2800+ whereas x1400/7400 gets only around 2000. Although these benchmarks don't mean much.

X700 hands down, its more powerful then the X1400 even if the x1400 has 512MB most games now a days dont make full use of the 512MB.
