I basically want to max out my graphics capabilities w/o any overclocking. This is really my first dedicated graphics card and there are way too many settings in the control center. Do these even matter (I'm able to change settings in games w/o the control center) or do I have to set the catalyst control center the same as the game for best results?

so you are trying to say that you dont want to touch the settings in the control center.....yet you want the best possible gamming performance?????

welll................you might have to tweek the settings a littlebit...........

the X1400 is a midrange card...not too weak, yet not too powerful.

the the latest games should run fine @ medium~high settings.

I don't know if changing anything in the control panel will help you; at least update your drivers - the ones from www.omegadrivers.net work the best.

Check the mobile graphics card guide stickied at the top of this forum for more info on your card and its capabilities, but what deedeeman said is generally correct.

As said by Mr. Moderator himself. I would suggest you to get OMEGA Drivers , it gives some umph

OMEGA has some tools to tweak , it should do a great job. Of course you cant push the graphics card that much without overclocking...it

What I'm basically sayin is that I want as much performance as I can get without overclocking (changin software settings is fine). I'll try out the omegas but can I uninstall the ATI catalyst control center or is that required?

You would need to uninstall the current ATI driver and then you would need to install OMEGA Drivers. OMEGA Drivers gives a little bit of boost...Not that much , maybe 0.5-1.5% gain

Before you uninstall any new drivers, uninstall the old ones via the Control Panel and restart. It's the safest and best way to do that.

Cool, just installed them; now what? Is that it? Also, (don't you love how many questions I have?) what are the ati tray tools? Are they necessary?

ATI Tray Tools is a tool that shows your current fps. Of course it allows users to overclock as well [They call it safe overclocking]. Why not just increase the clock speed a little bit more..Trust me , you might able to get 1-2 fps extra. Tweak more and get more.....Its up to you.......

After you have installed , thats it..I would suggest you to tweak a little bit more , make sure you have a cooler installed

I'd uninstall the Catalyst Control Center, never was a fan of that; I use ATI Tray Tools, that is the best utility for any ATI user. The FPS counter can be useful in games.

After installing them all including DIRECTX on an XP Professional OS i am still not able to run Games. Have Tried the DXDIAG too but all the Game Program Crashes.
Second the Resolution of the screen it seems can not be higher than 1024*268. Can't it be configured for Higher Resolution.

Sounds like you didn't install your video drivers - you could download drivers from www.omegadrivers.net, they are great.

hey, ive overclocked my x1400 alot as you can see in my sig..i was worried about cooling so i purchased a laptop cooler which helped alot..my laptop never gets hot just a bit warm at times...overclocking my card from i believe it was around 350/450 to 500/450 helped alot..it improved my 3dmark 05 score by almost 900+ and i play all games on high!!! Also Omega Drivers are great ive always been a fan of ati drivers but omega drivers are the best in my opinion!!!

In all the Nvidia laptops I've used (mainly for testing, I haven't had an Nvidia machine for a long time), I prefer the LaptopVideo2Go drivers because they are very compatible. The XtremeG are also good, you can't make a mistake by going with either.

Mem is not possible to change with hypermemory..the program gets confused to overclock the memory used from your ram and the memory thats built in!! But ive herd that if you can do it using powerstips older version..i used powerstips newest version to overclock mine!
