So I just got my HP NC8430, and it runs like a dream, except for when I'm playing WoW. My FPS is between 10 and 30 at all times, usually at about 25 FPS. It's noticeably choppy at times.

    My ingame video settings:

I've tried messing around with video options and game profiles in ATI Tray Tools, setting "everything" to high performance etc.

    My setup:
    C2D 7200 - 2GHz
    ATI X1600
    2GB RAM

I'm using the latest mobility Catalyst drivers from ATIs site, with ATI Tray Tools instead of CCC.

Am I being too optimistic if I'm saying that i should be able to run it at those settings at native res, and get at least 40 FPS? If not, how can I increase my FPS without radically decreasing quality?

I tried running 3Dmark05, and got right below 4000 3Dmarks, which apparently is completely normal for this setup.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to decrease you quality settings! turn off your AF off, lower you terrain distance. Turn you vsync off and use performance catalyst settings.

Do you use any add-on? I found that some add-on kill your fps especially the type that draws something on the screen and collects data all the time. Try to run wow without any add-on and compare your fps.
With x1600 you should be able to run wow at your setting just fine.

My laptop is the same specs as you , an acer 8215

I have the same WoW settings (also 1680x1050 reso).

My fps with that settings is average 50+, and goes to 110 if I look on IF/SW ground.

I'd turn vsync on. vsync doesn't hurt performance at all, and it can help it in many cases. I'd drop your AF a notch and see what happens. AF and AA are what kill performance, usually.
