Hello,
I am looking at 2 laptops side by side.
1. HP pavilion 8510p
graphics: ATI x2600 dx10
not sure how much graphics memory.
2.Sony Vaio FZ
graphics: Nvidia 8400M GT
1023 "Total" available graphics memory.
Which would be better?

Its unclear of how the Mobility HD 2600 performs at the moment, so an answer may not be totally true. However, ATI seems to be wanting this card to compete against the 8600M GS. The 8400M GT is a good graphics card, and its probably around the same as the Mobility HD 2600. If your choosing between two notebooks, it may be a good idea to look at some other features which set the two apart, and make a decision based on that.
-
My inclination is the x2600, at least graphically. It probably has at least 256MB VRAM, if not more.
-
The HD 2600 should be slightly better, say around the difference between the Go7600 and the Go7700. It should provide better performance in games, but it's not like the two cards are in different classes. I would also recommend looking at other features to decide.
-
Hate to stereotype, but Sony Vaio's are awful through my experience. You'll have less trouble with the HP.
-
Edit: better for gaming.
-
The one with the HD 2600 (not X2600)would be the faster.
-
Yeah, the HP should be better for gaming, but we really won't know much more until we get some reliable gaming tests of the HD 2600.
-
although the on the hp site, it says the laptop is x2600 not HD
-
btw, the FZ construction seems flimsy, saw it today. The hinge spacing seems like it is not built for the FZ at all... really average construction.
-
That appears to be a misprint, any 2000 series ATI card with dx10 is labeled HD, even if they don't say so on the HP site.
-
oh..ic.. Awesome. so. when is the hd 2600 supposed to be out?
also.. would it be better to wait a couple months before buying a laptop so the technology will be better(than it is now) and more mature? -
The HP HDX has the faster Mobility HD 2600 XT, but I believe this is one of the first notebooks to have the Mobility HD 2600. Others will also have this graphics card, but they haven't been released just yet.
-
about my previous question...would it be a wise choice to wait a couple months for the technology to mature, before buying a new laptop?
-
I would advise for the moment just to wait a little longer. Its always good to wait a few weeks after the launch of new technologies, and quite a few have just been released. Santa Rosa and DX10 are big advances, and bigger than normal. Some manufacturers have decided to do a complete overhaul or their ranges. Just follow the market carefully, and see what some other manufacturers come up with.
-
Well, the 8510p hasn't been released yet either. The Asus F8 was announced to have the HD 2600, though I'm not sure if that announcement is final or not.
I would wait at least till the end of July, and see what's available then. The general rule is to wait as long as you can, and buy when you have to. -
awesome. by then my budget might grow. lol.
edit:in that case i'll wait till mid/end august. -
The hp 8510 is quite a nice laptop, there won't be anything new to go for by august so you can't go wrong getting it now or waiting until then.
the hp 8510 is the santa rosa refresh of the nc8430 which got rave reviews around here and was usually recommended along with the thinkpad T60, and asus V1j for sturdy business laptops with power.
read this review and you'll get a better idea of what the laptop would be like:

thanx. i will look forward to the release of the hp 8510. does anyone know/can guestimmate when it will be out?
-
I called HP small business about the 8510p and they said it will be out by July
I'm going to grad school in the fall and want a heavy hitting gpu for biochemistry apps, but I'm also having issues between dv6500t and this 8510p. Its a tad off topic, but any ideas between the nVidia 8400 gs and ati x2600? I can wait till mid to end of July before I really need my own lappy.
thanks,
eli -
The HD2600 in the 8510p should be about twice as fast as the 8400GS in the dv6500t. I'd go for the 8510p if you can afford it.
-
what about the asus g1s? it has an 8600gt i think that would be a better candidate for gaming. or not?
-
This is the best 15inch gaming laptop you can get right now. It will be the best for playing future games.
-
I hope this hp model 8510p have a better LCD screen than DV6xxx models, I owned one and it sucks compared to my Sony FZ-190 HC LCD. Here's my FZ-190 compared with HP dv6000T LCD WXGA brightview (I guess not so bright anymore) Sony HC WXGA LCD rocks.....8400 GT 3dmark2006 score , Nvidia version 10128. No whining noise by the way.

your urls got cut off vince.

8400GT is certainly no slacker.
It got over 50FPS average on Quake 4 1024x768 4xAA/8xAF. The 8400gs couldn't pull off half of that (~24), and the x1400 hovered around ~15. -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
yeah the 8400 gt isn't bad especially considering that it is for even more portable laptops (that usually have lower resolutions like 1280x800) and it can keep up at that res. or 1024x768
but the hd 2600 is going to be more comparable to the 8600 gs, which is definitely a notch up from the 8400 gt...
hd 2600 = 8600 gs
both are > 8400 gt. -
i think i will buy a compal IFL90? whichever it is from xoticpc.com it comes w/ better parts than the asus g1s and a bigger video card, though i htink the asus video card is better?, not sure. but you get the same+better specs with the compal for about 200 less.
