I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with the Ati Mobility x300 128mb. I have already downloaded the latest drivers from Dell's Support site. I need some help regarding overclocking it -

    1. Are the Dell drivers good enough or is there something better??... (omega..etc. and where can i get it from)

    2. I already have the Ati Tool ver.0.24 , right now my clock speeds are set at default values....core-300 and memory-216.......can u suggest ,to what values can I overlcock them safely...(without frying my card.... :D )

Currently my 3dmarks05 score is a lowly 1319. So I am desperate....pls help.

    Thanks..... :)

The official Catalyst drivers from ati.com are great. But better is Omega drivers from omegadrivers.org. Get those dell drivers off your laptop :p

Hey the link at the end of the post might help you. I followed the information here when I went into the overclocking business. When I overclocked I was using the Omega drivers, as well as 19kfanGUI and SpeedswitchXP. 19kfanGUI allowed me to moniter temperatures as well as control the fan. I was also using a notebook cooler. Speedswitch XP is just like Dell's quickset. I just use it to ensure maximum perfomance. Also, I use ATI Tray Tools to overclock. I really like some of the features of the program a lot. Yes, so check out this site, and if you have anymore questoins let me know. I would say safely, you could overclock to at least 390 core / 280 mem. Those are the setting that I used for a while before I really started to squeeze perfomance out of it. Just remember that overclocking will void your warranty to state the obvious. Anyway here is the link...let me know if you have anymore questions....

Special thanks to amazin asian for this awesome guide!

I used the I9kFanGui and noticed that whenever I run the Ati Tool the GPU temperature immediately rises to 65 deg and keeps rising I aborted it at around 75 degrees.

Are such high temperatures normal or is something wrong with my notebook..I dont use any external cooling hardware....could this be the reason that I am not able to achieve higher clock speeds.

    pls. help
    thanks

I have an x700, but my card sizzles at a constant 68-73 degrees celcius when I'm playing a graphic-intense game. If it makes it to 75c, which it does occasionally, my laptop throttles my processor back to cool things off some. Really annoying, but I guess it keeps me from melting my pc.

Very, very nice. That's on par with an overclocked X600. Of course, the X300 and the X600 are pretty much the same card, difference is in the clocks.

You might consider getting a cooling pad, that helps. I don't overclock my notebook without using one, just to be safe. Keeps the temperature down a few degrees.

hey mainbaburau, when you overclock, make sure your setting are at max performance and not max battery. If you are on max battery your screen will go crazy. This is most likely because if you are on max battery, power play is enable which dramatically lowers your clock speeds to something like 100/120. So yea, plug it into the wall, and make sure you are on max performance, disable powerplay and then try again. Let me know if you need anymore help.

hey Chaz and ikovac, I have a quick question for either one of you, since you are both geniuses...lol....when I overclock and play Far Cry, sometimes the game freezes for a bit and then resumes. Is that a heat issue. I backed down on my overclocks to about 400/320, and I don't have that problem. And Chaz, I am using a cooling pad, it helps a lot! I will post my new 3Dmark with my new clock speeds as well as my temps for everyone here! Happy Overclocking! :)

Freezing and resuming sounds like ATI recovery working and clocking it back down. As for the power play thing its not just clocks, it goes crazy because of the lower voltage and voltage improves stability at higher clocks as long as the temp is not too high.

OK, here are the results that I am going to keep as they perform with more stability during gaming. I overclocked to 410/320 and got a 3dMark05 score of 1867. My CPU/GPU temperature started out at 42C/46C, the peak they reached during the test was 76C/69C. So for both CPU and GPU had temp increases of about 30C. This summer I plan on adding some artic silver 5 into the laptop, I will get a full review on the effects of it once it is done. Now, I better go study for my heat transfer test instead of playing around with this... :(

You must publish the project then post the compare link for others to view the details though I like the details of my own projects very much thankyou :p Oh and that could be hypermemory.

Yea, I just noticed the graphics chart after I posted, sorry about that. Oh and here are my specs for anyone with an x300 who wants to see what I overclocked too, I think the link will work this time. I like your specs better too Meaker, but I don't have an x600..... :(
By the way, any ideas why my FSB is only at 133Mhz? It should be at 533 like yours...

This is really, REALLY bad for your hardware. While your GPU temperature is within range for ATI processors, your Pentium M's temperature is HIGH. That's high in big letters. I'd ease off, those temperatures aren't good at all.

Your temps are fine, they are a bit on the high side for an Inspiron 6000 since other owners report lower temps during load but compared to other laptops it's absolutely fine.

Using I9kFan Gui, it recorded highest GPU temp. at 90 degrees!! while playing NFSMW for 2-3hrs. I haven't even overclocked my card yet..!!

Why is it so hot?? My CPU temperature maxed at 65degrees. Is this normal?

I don't use a Cooling Pad. Can anyone suggest any good cooling pas for the 6000.
    Thanks

Are your vents all cleaned out? They could have quite amount of dust on them, and the fan can have dust stuck to it to.

I would also check the heatsink, just to make sure

How do I check the Heat Sink? I have cleaned the vents from the outside (didn't open the laptop...don't know how to... :( ).

My fan runs at Max RPM of 4430. And the laptop is placed on a glass table.

    Thanks

You do know that gpus will reach higher temps and can take higher temps too right? The 6800U only starts to clock itself down at 125C.

This is the cooling pad I use on my i6000. Absolutely love it, all aluminum, three fans. It is excellent, though a little on the expensive side. There is also another version that has a media card reader and built in USB hub, really expensive though. Anyway, here is the link to the one I have.

    Hi guys,

lmark84 - sorry for a delay, I somehow missed your post. As you did get your answer I hope I didn't disappoint you too much. :)

Although this is the x300 thread, maybe some of my experience might help.

ATI x700 works fine at 120 degrees C. (checked) :)
Pentium M works fine up to near 100.

Of course it is much better to have it cooler. Undervolting PM brings my CPU from 77-80 down to 65-67 (in game!). The same performance/stability. :)
Now Ati that reaches 80-85 and CPU in my comp are under the same heatsink - meaning the most of the heat is still produced by x700, but fan has much easier time in cooling it.

Cooler helps a lot. In game only 3-5 degrees, but the heat doesn't build up inside the notebook. That is the main advantage - notebook fan cools CPU and GPU, and doesn't have to take all hot air from inside. My tests show that after the gaming (or 100% load) stops - undervolted and cooled nootebook falls right down to 51 (fan then turns off) in just about a second!

And a final thought - latencies that can be set in ATT are speed for nothing. No heat produced. They are tricky to set, but once you do it - You get even better results and the card can be overclocked more. To illustrate this:
I can overclock my x700 to 400/400 on default latencies - but to 415/435 with them set. And I get 3100 3dmark05 that way. For a x700 128 DDR(1) that is very, very fast. Default is at 2270. Now do the math. :)

    Cheers,

    Ivan
