how is x700 compare to 8400m gs
i hope is not too much of a downgrade.
i had x700 on my acer ferrari, i just bought the vostro 1400 so i can take it to class for lecture notes with 8400m gs (tho i wish they offered a better graphic card).
altho x700 is in a difference class according to one of the thread here but the only card in between these too card is the 6600. I hope i can still play with similar settings with 8400m gs.

o...and also both system have 2 gb of rams

how is it to the 8400m gt than?

kinda sux that i have to sacrifice my acer ferarri with a better graphic card for a smaller laptop with a crappier graphic card to carry around.

Just looking at the 3dmark06 scores...the 8400m GS is 50% more powerful the x700....am I missing something here???

Thats probably because 3dmark06 uses a Shader Model 3 benchmark, and the x700 dose not support SM3, it only goes to SM2b......thats maybe why its 50% more powerful, and anyways, 3dmark is not a good indicator of performance......

    btw,
my desktop 8400GS scores 25% better than my Go6600, which is around the power of the x700

I have a friend who bought one of the new Acer Aspire models with a Geforce 8400M GS 128 MB just last week. We did some tests and my GF Go 6600 just thrashes it. I also have a friend with a Pentium M laptop with an X700 128 MB. I don't know how it holds up against the 8400M GS, but its performance is pretty similar to my GF Go 6600. My best bet would be the 8400M GT. BTW, why don't you just get an 8600M GS or GT? There are a lot of 14" laptops with these cards. 14" is small enough to carry around.

And oh, 3DMark tests don't always reflect real-world performance.

    @ deedeeman

You have a 8400GS for the PC? I'm only familiar with the 8500 series as the low-end version for the PC. Then again, I'm not absolutely sure myself.

If anything, I don't think you are going to see a large downgrade. The newer laptop has a faster processor don't forget so that helps some. You're not going to find that any of the games you played with on the X700 are unplayable on the 8400M-GS.

It might actually handle newer games a bit better considering it has newer shaders etc. It probably isn't as powerful outright but it is newer, so you shouldn't see much of a performance hit in games.

Why not try the same game on each at native, same settings and see how they compare?

Deffinently a downgrade, the 6600 is still a very good card. Do you not have a choice to keep your Acer?

i have a acer ferrari 4000, tho its thin and catches people's attention, but its too heavy for my use. i have to go from classes to classes on bike since my campus (UCDavis) doesnt allow cars. it gets a bit tiring by the end of the day.
