are there different versions (or "generations") of 360 controllers for windows?

I don't mean wired vs wireless, but newer versions which replace or outperform older versions.

EDIT: Also, while on the topic: which would you say its more portable (for carrying along with the laptop? wired or wireless 360 Controller? they both have the same cable length, right?

Doubtful and even if there were, I'd doubt you'd be able to notice the difference unless you tore the whole thing apart.

Yeah, plus, they never fixed the awful D-pad, it's just awful, awful, awful... it's a sure sign that they never changed the internal design of the controller.

Wireless control is a bit bulkier in itself but has no cable. Wired controller is less bulky but has a cable. They're about the same. If you were referring to the plug & play recharging kit for the wireless controller then it would be a bit bulkier than the wired.

Just go with the wired, it's cheaper and you don't have to worry about batteries. The Xbox 360 controller is one of the best PC game-pads you will ever use.

Definitely the wired controller. It's lighter than the wireless controller due to the lack of battery pack. Wireless controller does come with a USB charging cable, but it's not as long as the wired one.

The wireless has no cable on the gamepad, but it does on the thingy I plug to the USB, so I have to carry both things around.

I already own the wired one, and I love it. I was just considering getting the wireless if it will feel more portable

Still, you need that wireless receiver to be plugged in in order to use the wireless controller. If you don't mind that, plus the removable battery compartment:

    Then go for it.

well I guess that the wired is more portable then, because you dont have the weight and volume of the battery pack and the receiver.

In both cases I would need to carry wires around.

I think the Logitech Chillstream is the best 360 controller out there, it even has a fan built in where you can set two speeds and much lighter than a regular 360 controller.

Microsoft claim that the Xbox360 limited edition controllers have an improved Dpad. I like the look of the Logitech Cordless Precision Controller (Xbox). People say it is a lot lighter and smaller than the original. My logitech PS2 wireless controller also has those attributes.

And keep in mind the wired 360 controller has stronger vibration, cos it doesn't need to save battery.

really? how do you know that?

if it is so, then its a good reason to stay with the wired

I don't think Xbox has changed there controller layout inside or out since release.

On the note of wired vs wireless, I prefer wired. I don't mind dealing with the chord, and I don't have to worry about when my controller's batteries are going to run out, and end up spending a small fortune on just batteries.

I think what he is saying is that when the batteries get low on life, the vibration in the controller gets weaker because there is less juice in the batteries, which is probably true.

I bought battery packs for $6.95 on the net , they come with USB->5V plugs. Plus, they are compatible with the PSP charger, so it's nice on my desktop

one of the advantages to a wireless solution would be multiple controllers on the computer taking up only one usb port which is extremely useful on emulators. Also other 360 devices such as the guitar work with the wireless adapter.

I have the so called Limited Red wireless controller and the dpad still sucks although it is better (barely) then my white wireless controller that came with my launch console.

As for battery life i didnt like having to charge my controller that often (like 1 time every two days or so) What i did was rip apart the wireless battery pack and replace the cheapo batteries inside with higher quality and much higher mAh rechargeable batteries. so now the controller battery will last on average about a week before having to charge them :D

I will be one of the people buying the new razer onza xbox 360 controller on release day as it looks to be a phenomenal controller but lord know when it will be released :(

No worries about spending a fortune on batteries when you use the Hybrid rechargeables. Those last as long as standard alkaline batteries in use and don't lose their charge either.

There are actually two different internal boards for the xbox 360 controller. they changed it at one point, i know this because i installed the ABXY light mod for my xbox pad, and in the tutorial for doing it, it told me there were two different style boards, so i had to follow one of them differently to connect my resistor up to.

I personally prefer the wired pad for both the xbox and laptop, the vibration is so much stronger on the wired pad compared to the wireless as well. simple USB and no worrying about batteries.
