7950gtx is hands down better for dx9.0c and earlier games, since it is in a higher class. for dx10 games, the difference is smaller, but the 7950gtx should still be better

ok. but in the next 4 years or so, almost all games will require dx 10. will the 7950gtx run those games without breaking sweat??

you can't expect the 7950GTX to play games that will be released 2 years from now on medium to high settings. So for high end gaming after 2 years you will have to buy a new laptop (since laptop graphic cards can't be replaced).

Yeah the 7950 is better if by hardcore you mean the best fps... but it wont do DX10 and it will suck with battery life and heat, plus its gonna come in bigger notebooks.

aww ****... now i am more confused than ever... the apple macbook pro has 256 mb of 8600M GT whereas the dell xps M1710 has 512 mb of 7950GTX... i'll have to keep my laptop for at least 4 years... so if 7950 is gonna suck like you say it will with dx 10 games, then there's no point in getting the dell. so what should i do now??

Look for laptops with 8600M GT or 8700M GT, <-- that's the most powerfull notebook GPU at the moment when looking at DX10 cards.

I'd suggest against the Mac, since their mobile GPU's are usually underclocked.

The 8600M is also going to suck in in less than 2 years with dx10 games, more than the 7950 GTX, IMO don't get a dx10 card unless it's high end like the 8700M or the 8800M. With the 7950 GTX you will be able to run most dx10 games on dx9 with high settings which look better than a 8600M on dx10 for the same game with mid settings. And 2 years for a gaming laptop is probably the most you can hope for. 4 years is just out of the question. Start saving buddy.

Just get the 8600M GT. But if ur not in a hurry to buy 1, in 1 month time there should be 8800M appearing on the market. Or at least a 8700M GT will do you good.

Not all that much...the core clock speed is downclocked from 475 to 470...

...though the memory clock is down to 635 from an original 700...overclocking it up to the stock speeds shouldnt be too much of a hassle

the best part though? at idle...its 169(core)/100(memory)...which is why my battery lasts over 3.5 hours at two steps below full brightness while running 5 different things and listening to music...

well if mobility is anything important to you, the 8600gt is the closest thing to a 7900gs go

i agree there is no such a thing as future proof in technology , 7950 gtx will run circles around 8600gt, however it is not dx 10 compatible. Now 8600gt is indeed dx 10 card but nobody knows how it will perform with dx 10 games (my prediction not that good)when it comes to dx 9 games 7950 gtx is the way to go, and dx 10 games will be backwards compatible , so they will run in dx 9 mode and of course u wont be able to enjoy all the eye candy that dx 10 offers, and because 8600 gt is nit such a powerfull card , u probably wont be able to njoy all glory of dx 10 with 8600 gt either so.....

i'd suggest you just get a laptop with the 8700m gt or gs whichever is out.

Agreed! ;) I'll be getting a new laptop at September or December this year with either a 8700M-GT or a 8800M-(???) <---whatever is best available at that time. Hopefully I can afford the price by then.. Would be interesting to see if the 8800M-SE(GS?) would be better than the 8700M-GT or not...lol

The 7950 is definitely a much better card, but the 8600M GT will last you longer because of its DX10 capabilities.

The 8700M GT, however, is very comparable to the 7950. Hopefully, more notebooks will have this card available in the coming months.

Something no-one has mentioned is that, although only the GF8 series supports DX10 (and the equivalent ATI series, of course), games will not be released in only DX10 format for a while. You will likely be able to run almost all games that come out for the next while with a GF7 card, in a DX9-compatible mode. There may or may not be some features that you can't run without a DX10 card, but so far there is no proof to the hype about DX10. In brief, the 7950 is the most powerful card available at the moment, and will play all games that do not REQUIRE DX10 better than the 8600M GT. However, as said there will soon be higher-end GF8 cards out, and although we have seen some specs for them, no-one knows how they will perform in games relative to the 7950. If you can wait for a bit to see how they do, then do that, as they will be your best bet for your laptop to last as long as possible.

True. But I think the 8700M-GT is the best graphics card now. It will be available in a few weeks time. ;)

I'm a scientist - prove it (benchmarks would do nicely, thanks! :D )

DX10 has so far not been so good, Vista has been horrible, Turboboost isn't much... forgive me if I am holding out for some kind of numerical or anecdotal proof from users before I think of the 8700M GT as anything but a yet-to-be-released card that the guys who sell it say is really cool.
