    Hi,

I recently bought a laptop (specs are in my sig) and I installed Counter-Strike: Source on it. Is it normal for the game to only run at ~43 FPS in the video stress test? It seems very slow for a game that's so old running on a brand new computer.

    Thanks!!

The 8400GS is pretty weak, and using 1680x1050 is pretty grueling. Turn off any AA/AF filtering, VSync, and possibly - step down to DX8.1 mode (instead of DX9 or DX9+).

that sounds about right. the 8400m gs is basically the bottom of the barrel of dedicated gpu's. the only current gpu that is slow is the 8400m g.

your bottleneck is the 8400M as its a low end video card. Don't expect much from it especially at WUXGA+. Try lowering resolution first before any other tweaks.

    I'd lower your resolution aswell.

I have an 8400M GS and on 1280x800 with everything set to high my CS:S stress test pulls in around 90 fps. :)

Ah, OK, thanks for the help! The game looks fine to mine, I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't some other problem.

Options ---> Keyboard tab ---> Advanced

    Tick "Enable Developer Console" (~)

Then close the options window and bring up the console with ~. Type in it "mat_dxlevel 81" and press enter/the submit button. Now some of the effects will be gone/toned down, but you should get a nice performance boost. You might be able to keep 1680x1050 smooth in DX8.1 mode.

Does the lower resolution look really different, or is it basically the same in terms of quality?

It will look far worse. The in game fps feels to low? Since you already know that there is nothing wrong with your notebook, I would keep the resolution if the gameplay is not bothering you

Uhuh yeah the 1680*1050 res is the prohlem. The 8400M GS isn't powerful enough to game on that res for games like CS:S.

fortunately CS:S is cpu limited and your CPU is good so by dropping res and eye candy (somewhat) your FPS will skyrocket.

OK, I'm getting 81 FPS at 1280x800 and 68 FPS at 1440x900. That seems to correspond to the 43 FPS for 1680x1050. Something interesting though is that when I changed it to "reflect all" for the water and set it to 1680x1050, it actually got 47 FPS.

Type these commands one-by-one in console
    'fps_max 101'
    'cl_updaterate 101'
    'rate 25000'

Guys, i play source on 6100 & i get 35-45 FPS at 1024 X 768 HIGH settings.. no problem with his GPU.... his Video Driver is the culprit or the console commands

Hmm, OK, I'll give that shot right now. Thanks!

EDIT: Nope, there's no change as a result of the console commands.
