I want to get my parents a <$500 notebook.

Best Buy has a Gateway for $480 I am also considering:

Gateway Notebook with Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor 3100+
Model: MX6422 that also has a Firewire, DVD Burner, 80GB HD and comes with Windows Media Edition

Circuit City has this one on special for $399 this week:

    Acer Aspire Notebook PC (AS3618AWLCI)
    Pentium M 1.7GHZ 512MB Ram and 60GB HD

Any suggestions??? - thinking of going with the Gateway...

I'd get the Acer, both probably have similar build quality so you then look at the components. a 60GB HD is most likely enough, and the Pentium M is a great deal more powerful than the Sempron as well as cooler, it also has much better battery conservation.

In the end, I'd say Acer all the way. Of course you could order a Dell with coupons for them if they want something more powerful. I've seen Core Duo's go for less than/around $500 that way.
