So I accidentally broke my screen and I don't have the ADH warranty =(.

How much is a repair going to cost me?

Oh yeah and I heard that maybe I could upgrade my warranty to an ADH one? Is this possible?

Search eBay, if you're lucky it might be had for like $180
Dunno about upgrading your warranty, but you could try.

This was a Gateway M-6851. Got it from newegg, but its discontinued there.
It was a 15.4" WXGA Ultrabright TFT, or so says the box it came in.
But yeah doesn't upgrading the screen void a warranty?

Alright, looks like I have another DIY project ahead.

One last question: does it matter what kind of 15.4" inch gateway screen im getting as a replacement? Or does it ahve to be EXACTLY the same?

it needs to have the same connector cable. i suggest googling a guide, or reading the DIY screen replacement in the Official 7811FX thread, stickied at the top of this forum.

One warning on replacing LCD. I haven't done it on a gateway, but I have done it on a couple other laptops. The wireless antenna mounts can be a bit tricky. Some are built into the LCD support that runs up the side and some are just wires that run up a channel on the edge of the lid. If it's the wire one, use a little double sided tape in a couple of spots to hold the wire in place, otherwise it's easy for the wire to wiggle out of the channel during assembly. The wire can then wind up anywhere and screw up your wireless signal.

I would be very cautious before dropping money on a new panel that's not exactly the same as stock. I've read from several sources that screens not made for your specific laptop will not work because the motherboard is not programmed for it. Also, watch for the fragile connectors and cords as fiziks said.

its got nothing to do with that, as long as it has the same connector your good, its the same as putting new RAM, CPU, or HDD in it.

Ok so i took a look at these sites, but there sure are a LOT of types of screens. I know compatibility shouldn't be too much of a problem...but is there any way I can find out what kind of screen i have exactly? I'm not sure where to look on the computer, or with the instructions/random papers it came with.

Oh wait, I read some more and found this Pc wizard 2008 program that tells me everything about my computer!. Neat!

    It says I have a Samsung SEC3945

if you go to guru3d.com and download everest ultimate, run it and under the monitor subsection of the display menu, it should tell you what type of LCD you have.
