    Hello,

I am so happy with this laptop but one think really bugs and annoys me. When I press the DVD or music button on the Multimedia Panel it always opens Media Center.
Does anybody know where and how I can change those applications so it opens iTunes and PowerLink DVD for that?

    Best Regards

Someone on this forum finally found the registry file you have to edit to change over the multimedia bars applications... and now i cant find the post.

if i find it i'll edit my post here to list it down. I freaking hate being at work and not having access to firefox and all my pinned posts :(

Well after Chatting with tech support i was told once it could not be done. I was told it was default, and that's that. She couldn't explain why, how, or what. 30 seconds later i was told by another rep it could be changed by changing my default media player.

Of course they can't walk me through it because i need to call a fee based tech support number to get a walkthrough... *rolls eyes*

So i was messing around with windows.. and there seems to be a option to change my default mediaplayer however when i make the change it doesn't stick......
I'll change it to winamp, and then i'll click ok and it'll show a progress bar for like 3 seconds and when it's done it closes...

Then i open the thing back up and it's all set back to "default media player" Which is of course frustrating on a-lot of levels... I figure i'll keep at it and see if there is any truth to the 2nd tech's suggestion.

However, i did figure out how to disable the media keys (minus the mute and volume slider) if you're interested.

Here are the registry keys to change:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\1]
    "ApplicationPath"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\2]
    "ApplicationPath"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\""
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\3]
    "ApplicationPath"="\"C:\\Program Files\\CyberLink\\PowerDVD\\PowerDVD.exe\""

NOTE: I'm not exactly sure these work, as I never installed the media button driver and thus have no 1/2/3 directory under HotStartButtons and can't test it out. But, I remember a couple of others using this successfully in other threads. Just set a restore point and if something goes amiss, just restore back. But it's still a "use at your own discretion" kinda thing.

I can't get my Multimedia Panel to do anything at all - eeek (squeals like little girl)!

Did a clean install of Vista64; now pressing any of the panel controls (like DVD) makes the whole panel glow more brightly for a bit, but that's all.

Is the panel driver-based, and if so where can I find the driver for it? Or do I enable it in some other way??

    Any help much appreciated!

I've found the files... seems fairly straight forward.. All 3 point to ehshell.exe of course both 1 and 3 also say after the file path directmedia:discplayback

    number two says directmedia:music

Makes me wonder what the difference in 1 and 3 are.....

either way i'll try it out when i'm rested... i've created the restore point all ready however. Unless someone else does it first, i'll do this in the morning.

    These work.

In order to do this you should first backup the registry by creating a system restore point. After that is done restart.
Upon boot up open a run terminal and type "regedit" and push continue on UAC popup.

Navigate to the key path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons
( you do this just like you were navigating to any file in a tree)

upon hitting that directory you will see folders labeled 1 , 2, and 3

Click on the first folder and in the right frame you'll notice two "data" files. One says default, the other is the one we want to modify.
Right click on the file and go to modify.

From there you want to edit the filepath and direct it to your software program of choice.

Do this for all three keys/files and then restart your computer.

If you did it right, the media buttons should now launch your programs of choice. adios windows crapcenter

    ***note***

I have my first and second ones pointing to Winamp and all the buttons work with that program.
My third one is pointing to VLC media player and though none of the play/pause chapter skip and stop buttons work with it, the DVD button launches it. You might have different results with your DVD player of choice.

Also of note, the "directmedia:discplayback and directmedia:music" are probably not required.
I know that on the VLC one i had to get rid of "directmedia:discplayback" from the key because VLC was launching and saying there was a error as it could not find directmedia:discplayback.

I've not noticed any problems with leaving the others as they were.

my keys now look like this

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\1]
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Winamp.exe" directmedia:discplayback

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\2]
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp\Winamp.exe" directmedia:music

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\3]
    ""C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"

Edit the official thread to include these keys.

For those of you who did a fresh install and when you found HotstartButtons and couldn't find the folders "1,2,3", simply follow these steps:

Right click on HotStartButtons > New > Key

Hope that helps someone like it helped me =)

You probably don't have it linked to the application, you have it to the folder the application is in. make sure whatever app you're trying to run has .exe after it.

Direct, I linked it correctly to the Windows Media Player but it opens the folder itself. I went to the registry and here's my link: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe"

I have the same iTunes issue, it opens it but next/last buttons do not work when iTunes in minimized, oh well.

I have my DVD button pointed at PowerDVD but it does nothing.
I just want it to open PowerDVD, does the "discplayback" thing at the end have anything to do with it? This is in folder "3"

    ""C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD8\PowerDVD8.exe"" /directmedia:discplayback

Ok, new problem, I upgraded to Vista Ultimate x64 and the 1,2,3 folders are missing. So I made new ones like "JBN" posted "Right click on HotStartButtons > New > Key".

But now what do I do? To get the correct one in the folder?

    Right click/New/?

    Choices:
    String Value,
    Binary Value,
    DWORD 32bit Value,
    QWORD 64bit Value,
    Mutli string Value,
    Expandable String Value

I'm certainly no expert on this matter, but the document in this file helped me.

    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/firmware/hotstart.mspx

anyways, here's the pertinent part (hope its not too long):

Configure the Windows Hotstart Button Agent and Application Launch
Windows Vista provides a user-mode button agent that subscribes to application-launch notifications from the Windows kernel power manager and launches the application that is associated with a specific button usage ID in the Windows registry. This behavior is implemented as a task named HotStart that is launched by Windows Task Manager when the user logs on.
The HotStart task can be viewed and configured in the Scheduled Tasks viewer management console in the Performance and Maintenance Control Panel application.
    Configuring the Target Application
The manufacturer can configure the application that is associated with a specific UsageID by using the following registry key:
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\MobilePC\HotStartButtons\<UsageID>

<UsageID> corresponds to the value that is specified in the system’s ACPI namespace. The GHID method returns this value for each application-launch button instance. Note that this registry key is not present in the registry by default; it must be added by the manufacturer when the system is configured to support direct application launch.
As described in Direct Application Launch from System Startup on Windows Vista, the usage ID is encoded in little-endian order. The proper <UsageID> key should be created in little-endian byte order, with leading zeros truncated.
    Examples
If UserHIDBlock of button 2 is '21 01 00 00', the key name in little-endian would be '00000121' before truncation and '121' after truncation.
If UserHIDBlock of button 0 is '04', the name in little-endian would be '04' before truncation and '4' after truncation.
    Syntax
To create the target application path, create a string value named ApplicationPath under the appropriate <UsageID> key. The value for this key should contain the full path to the application to be launched, enclosed in quotation marks. Any additional command line parameters should be delimited by white space after the application-launch path.
For example, to launch foo.exe with /bar and /xyz as parameters, specify the following:
    "C:\Windows\System32\foo.exe" /bar /xyz

The maximum length of ApplicationPath string is 260 characters. This includes all executable launch paths and parameters.
    Note
In the Windows Vista Community Technology Preview (CTP) build 5308 and earlier, instead of creating a value called ApplicationPath, the (Default) value is used as the launch application path. For example, to launch calc.exe, you would set the (Default) value to "C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe".s

Windows Vista does not populate the application-launch button by default, and so makes no associations between usage ID values and target applications. The manufacturer can choose any value for usage ID and map it to any target application.
    Example Configuration
The following example demonstrates how to configure a system that implements a direct application-launch button to start an application. In this example:
The BIOS returns the value 0x04 for the usage ID when the GHID method is evaluated.
Windows Media Player is the application that is launched when the application-launch button is pressed.

To configure the HotStart task to launch Microsoft Windows Media® Player, follow these steps:
    1. Start the Registry Editor and select the following key:
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
    2. Add the following key:
    MobilePC
    3. Under the MobilePC key, add the following key:
    HotStartButtons
    4. Under the HotStartButtons key, add a key whose name matches the UsageID returned by the BIOS GHID method for the button that you are configuring. In this example, the BIOS returns 0x04 for the UsageID, so the key under the HotStartButtons key would be:
    4
    5. Edit the default value for this key and set this value to the full path of the application to launch:
    "C:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe"

Also, thanks a lot for the help directeuphorium

use a thing called "hotstart" you can find it on the gateway website...and then you can edit what you want the buttons to do in the registry... i have my music note open winamp and the DvD opens media player classic

the registry tree goes like this
    Computer
    Hkey local machine
    system
    current control set
    control
    mobile pc
    Hot start buttons
(then it shoes buttons 1-5) you can only edit 1-3 the =>,music,Dvd
