Try this gateway serial number lookup.

Gateway Support - Drivers & Downloads

Use your serial number and see what drivers for it comes up from the gateway site. This is what I use for my NV52, NV79, P-6860FX, P-7811FX, M-6860 laptops and so far been successful in the hardware drivers....all Windows7x64Ult Sp1 that is.

I think the OP installed the wrong O/S for the laptop. To the OP did you check with the serial as I mentioned to see which O/S your system came installed?? Even my P-6860FX and P-7811FX where both Vista no XP are you sure your doing the O/S installation right?

That a good reason for the driver(s) not to work. He should install Vista or better yet Win 7. Most of the Vista drivers work for Win 7. One exception is the Webcam driver. That one doesn't work and he will need to install the Vista driver used on P-6860FX. Most of the drivers can be obtained from the Gateway Web site.
