okey... so, ive had my 6831 for a while now... its been working great, but for the last 2 months or so ive been having serious heat probs
i use Dox's optimised drivers, latest... and i can run a whole bunch of games (except call of juarez and its stupid sound problems...) the laptop is mainly used for games, and its absolutely unmodded (havnt really had any spare cash since i got it)
these days ive started getting regular overheat shutdowns from most of my games... like overlord 2, anno1404, mass effect, empire total war, hell even crappy games (graphics wise) like mount and blade and Gothic 3...
at first i thought it was probably the crappy little CPU which i wish i could upgrade, so i went about undervolting the mofo... as soon as i fired up HWMonitor i see a GPU temp of 112.... now, correct me if im wrong, but thats just WAYYYY too hot for a GPU at rest...
i use a laptop cooler, very old cooler master (everything i own is crappy cept for my pride and joy 6831) and i hooked it up... and eventually the temps went down to 69....... but thats still pretty high as far as i can see from other peoples temps.... so i tried underclocking the card, i underclocked it ALOT, and then i got about 102C at rest with no cooler, which... is still way too much
im thinking its probably that the fan has just stopped working... i checked and the left side fan, the one under the big copper heatsink and heat exhaust is just not rotating... im just here for a consult, and to see if anyone else has similar problems... should i just go and get the thing replaced, or should i be worried about some serious burnouts on the mobo?
also - ive cleaned it with a hoover and soft brush recently, i would have gotten a can of air, but they're next to impossible to find in bulgaria![]()
thx for reading![]()

Its probably dust that is built up in your GPU fan. For some reason dust tends to wrap itseld up in our fan spindles. I would suggest taking it apart and getting a q-tip or something similar and trying to do a really good cleaning of the fans.
Typically that will fix the problem once you get the inevitable wad of dust out of the fan.
It should go back to spinning and cooling your GPU again -
fair enough, but how the hell do i get to that fan?... its the left hand side one, not the one under the panel...
which kinda worries me.... since the one that is right above the GPU is spinning... it just seems to not be cooling the thing down (*.*) -

I know it says 7805 but that is actually a disassembly guide for all of the 17in Gateway FX models (they are all the same) -
okey.... amazingly... after a month and a half of checking and monkeying with that fan... it just started spinning lol......... but its still very weak... too weak.... i looked at that dissassembly guide... looks like im going to have to butcher the thing to get to that fan...
a while back i made a thread about manual fan control, dont suppose anyone has made a breakthrough on that
also - THX for fast reply Kamin ^^ -

Yeah its a pain in the butt to take the thing apart, but its worth it to get a good cleaning and gives you a chance to reapply some good thermal goop to the CPU/GPU to help even further with temps.
Unfortunately we still have no fan control, its still hard locked out in the BIOS and no one has been able to edit them to change any of that. I'm still waiting for a 3.6gHz OC on my x9000 in my 6860 -
Just so you know... Be glad that the thing didn't fry at 102c. I had a prior laptop hit 88c and I knew there were issues. Turned out that the fan had died completely on me. On that token if the fan is weak you may want to consider getting it replaced.

oh good god.... scariest hour ive had in a while........... opened the mother up, cleaned both fans internally with 100's of q-tips lol.... now its working like a charm, i think the dust was actually clogging up the spindle like you said, its spinning now, and im getting a steady 47C... im gonna run 3dmark 2007 like 3 times, see if theres any artifacts, and read temps... running orthos now for 45mins... testing .500volts under the norms, seems to be just fine - 7C offa CPU temp... its nearly at room temp ^^
i got a couple of probs tho.... somehow, the media bar was damaged when i removed it... i cant clamp it all the way down, as the power button seems to be getting pressed, and it shuts down the machine :/... any tips, there is visible burning on the cable, or at least it looks like it - also had some mysterious smoke rise from under the keyboard... scared the crap outta me, turned out to be a long screw in the wrong place, pressing up against the keyboard, and creating a current... burning the plastic of the keyboard, or thats what optimism would dictate haha
im going to spend the next 30 minutes hoping it doesnt blow up, i couldn't afford to replace this for at least a year... and i'd be bored as hell without this thing
102C GPU at rest..?!
