I know a CCFL panel won't work in an LED-based notebook because the panel isn't thin enough, but can an LED screen be used in place of the 17" CCFL inside the 7805u?

    I have the WXGA+ 1440x900 panel on my 7805u and would like to upgrade to a WSXGA+ or WUXGA+. I saw this new WUXGA+ LED panel ( LP171WU5 A1/A2)
on ebay for $185 shipped: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150326931668

Can anyone see a problem in using it (i.e. the mounting holes wouldn't match up, cables are located in different location, or uses a different inverter)?

I've been informed that LED screens don't use a proper inverter so they are not compatible. I was looking to upgrade to that exact screen in my old 6860.

I now have an LG WUXGA panel in my 7805u but it's really not that great. Against popular opinion I actually prefer the AUO WUXGA panels.

RGB LED is what I would really like though - I wonder if there is a way to adapt a WU5 somehow - I'm so tempted to give it a go.

EDIT: Good link which explains things quite well.

Maybe if we could replace the inverter with an LED driver board - not an easy task though I would guess.

I remember in my old laptop i changed the lcd to another which was better and it worked for a while but then it gave out due to not havng the proper inverter to compliment the lcd

I have the AUO WUXGA screen. It's beautiful. No issues with it.

Yeah I'm a bit of a video/audiophile though and strive for great black levels and colour accuracy. The LG is very poor when it comes to black levels and the AUO is very poor when it comes to colour accuracy. I think I might have to change laptops so I can get a better quality screen :( I love these Gateways though.

Hey, I've got a question for you all --

My 7805u has the crappy 1440x900 screen, thanks to geek squad after they "repaired" my laptop. It USED to have the 1200p, when I bought it... I want my extra pixels back!! And I told them that many times but they won't listen... so Im trying to take things into my own hands.

Can I go and buy a WUXGA LCD online, and replace it myself? Are the two screens completely the same, or is there some direct compatibility with my video card preventing me from simply changing them out?

I was thinking one of these...

P.S. sry for digging up a slightly old thread

OOOOH LED would be great. this thing gets amazing battery life for a 17" with the P series processor and on power saving, I can only imagine getting even longer with the LED panel...

on a side note. I have used both the AOU and the LG panels and the LG was better... the viewing angles were far superior on the LG

No you can't put an LED backlit LCD in these Gateways.

Technically the WUXGA found on 7811FX and 7805u are the crappiest I ever seen.

Far inferior to the WUXGA screens found on other notebook makers such as Dell, HP, and Apple.

It's cloudy, some area of the screen lack luminance, and not quite as sharp as other makes.

The LG 1440x900 are far more superior, I just wished they had a 1680x1050 screen and not WUXGA which isn't quite suitable for gaming.

My 7805 has the 1200 screen and I love it.

A buddy of mine picked up LED monitor for his computer, Cant say I liked it more than the monitor on the gateway.

But that being said I was thinking about an over haul for the 7805. Was going to upgrade the CPU, add blu ray, 2nd HDD and bluetooth. Might if I can find a good upgrade replace the screen also. but as of right now im not to sure what would be worth it when it comes to the screen.

Wait so they put a 1440x900 screen in replacement of your 1920x1200 screen? Let them have it(geek squads here are full of idiots), show them proof that when you purchased that laptop or had it brought it that it had the higher resolution screen, that is basically robbery lol.

How can I?? I fought them for weeks, and the only proof I have is my model number, and a message I had them send to the repair center when I first gave them my book, specifically telling them to give me the same kind of screen (ironically enough... because I had a feeling they might do this).

And yes... I think Geek squad is full of idiots everywhere...

Why isn't WUXGA suitable for gaming? Aren't higher resolutions better, and aren't those 2 the same aspect ratio? I mean, I run some games at 1600x1024, but I have a 7811 with 512mb of vram. I always thought that was weird. Why give the 7805 1gb and the 7811 512mb. Given their factory resolutions, shouldn't it be the other way around?

hey guys.. I recently bought the 7805u and it has the 1440 x 900 also.. So how much better is the 1920 x 1200 display? The only problem i have with the display in it, is that the viewing angle seems small.. And i mean you have to have it tilted up/down just right to have the perfect looking picture. Is this just because it's not LED?

Does anyone know of good replacement screens that will work that has the best resolution and best viewing angle??
